The bite continues to be good throughout the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and south into Mosquito Lagoon. The water level has lowered quite a bit bringing a lot of the fish out of the ditches and on to the flats into schools and small groups.
We have been targeting black drum, redfish , snook and trout this past week and the weather has been great for it. Clear skies and clean water has produced the perfect storm of a bite. February is usually always a great month to sight fish and by the looks of it , I do not think it’s going to disappoint this year as well as we have been on a great bite so far. The bite has been good the last couple of weeks with a couple days in there where we had to work for it. With the same weather pattern continuing into next week I see it continuing to stay good. The water clarity in and around the New Smyrna Beach area has been great this past month. Both the beach and the backwaters of New Smyrna have been producing bites in and around the bait pods. Live bait and artificials have both been working well early in the mornings.
As the sun gets higher and the day gets hotter the bite has started to slow down. The bite in Mosquito Lagoon has also been good in the early mornings. The fish can found in the shallows early and then moving off the flats to deeper ledges as the day moves on. The same as the New Smyrna area , targeting bait pods with live or artificial baits has been the key. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The fishing in and around the New Smyrna Beach waters has been good and should not be slacking off anytime soon. We have had variety of fish both in the intracoastal and the backwaters of Mosquito Lagoon. Look for jacks , tarpon and several other species cruising in the bait pods throughout the intracoastal. The shallow water bite has also been good with several snook, redfish and trout coming boat side this past week. The bait has been plentiful from New Smyrna south through Mosquito Lagoon allowing easy meals for game fish. Live bait has been working well and matching the hatch has been even better. Plugs and spoons have also been getting the job done in the early mornings but has been slowing down on artificial as the water starts to warm later in the day. The forecast for the next week looks to be good so the bite should continue to be good.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The weather has seemed to settle down a bit this week getting back into the 70’s during the day. The water temps are going to take a little while to get back to normal making for some lethargic fish for a few days. Patience and slower presentations will be the key for the next week or so. Shrimp and small soft plastics have been working well early and later in the day moving to a spoon or cut bait as the water starts to warm. Look for the bite to only get better as the week moves on. The water clarity is making for some great sight fishing for drum, redfish , trout and even snook. Lighter leader material will help out greater for those spookier fish in the shallows on a extremely clear day.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The fish in the New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon waters got a little shell shocked this week. With the passing of this recent cold front it has brought the air temps and water temps down quite a bit. It takes a few days for the fish to adjust and get into their winter time patterns. It looks like we will have a reassuring front later this week which should lock our fish into their winter time pattern bringing back a consistent bite. In these cooler temps finger mullet and shrimp have been the go to baits. Look for trout, redfish and black drum in the shallows throughout the day gathering warmth from the mud or sand bottom. The snook and mangrove snapper have been holding in the deeper waters looking for a easy meal.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The weather this past week or so for the holidays was definitely warmer than expected but made for some great outdoor activities. We had quite a bit of boat traffic throughout the New Smyrna Beach waters and Mosquito Lagoon over the holiday week. The fishing has continued to stay strong with several species coming boat side. We have had a little front come in to town to cool things down a bit which will only make the bite that much better. The shallow water bite for redfish, black drum and snook has been working well with artificials and live bait. Soft plastics , spoons and plugs have been working well and live finger mullet and live shrimp just as good. Looks like the weather should be stable for the few days making for the bite to continue to be strong.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 It has been a busy week on the water with a influx of anglers stemming from the holidays. The weather has also been a factor to the crowds because not many places have high 70’s and sunny skies during Christmas. The fishing continues to be good bringing in several different species this past week from redfish and trout to snook and black drum. The water has been very clean throughout the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon making for fun sight fishing. It looks like this weather will be hanging around for a while so it’s probably a good time to take advantage of calm conditions into 2022.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 It has definitely not felt like winter this past week and looking at the weather for next week it looks to continue on this trend. The fish were starting to get into a winter time pattern throughout Mosquito Lagoon until the weather took a turn and warmed the water temps back up. The same go’s for the New Smyrna Beach area as well , they have kinda fell back into a fall time pattern with food on their minds instead of survival. Look for the redfish , trout and black drum to be cruising the shallows looking for a easy meal. The snook can still be found hanging around and in structure along with sheepshead as well. Live shrimp, mud minnows and finger mullet have been working well. Since the water has warmed back up a bit plugs and spoons have been working well along with soft plastics for the artificial bite.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 Temperatures here in the New Smyrna Beach area have started to level off. Cool mornings and evenings with comfortable mid day temperatures has been making for pleasant fishing conditions. We have had some higher then average water conditions due to this recent low pressure dumping several inches of rain. Look for the fish to be holding in and around the bait in places the water is usually extremely low. Water temps are cooling a bit so if using artificials slow your retrieves a bit and smaller baits have been working well. Live bait has been working well also like pin fish, mullet and shrimp . The water clarity been fairly good throughout Mosquito Lagoon and if temperatures continue will only get better throughout winter.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 It seems as though our fall weather has started to move into the New Smyrna Beach area bringing a little crispier morning’s. We are still seeing a good amount of bait throughout the intracoastal and Mosquito Lagoon. As we move further into fall look for the water to clear up and the fish to start changing their patterns. Look for your redfish and trout to move into the pot holes and on shallow mud flats with bait. Small artificials along with shrimp and finger mullet work well this time of year and the upcoming months.
