The weather has seemed to settle down a bit this week getting back into the 70’s during the day. The water temps are going to take a little while to get back to normal making for some lethargic fish for a few days. Patience and slower presentations will be the key for the next week or so. Shrimp and small soft plastics have been working well early and later in the day moving to a spoon or cut bait as the water starts to warm. Look for the bite to only get better as the week moves on. The water clarity is making for some great sight fishing for drum, redfish , trout and even snook. Lighter leader material will help out greater for those spookier fish in the shallows on a extremely clear day.

The fish in the New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon waters got a little shell shocked this week. With the passing of this recent cold front it has brought the air temps and water temps down quite a bit. It takes a few days for the fish to adjust and get into their winter time patterns. It looks like we will have a reassuring front later this week which should lock our fish into their winter time pattern bringing back a consistent bite. In these cooler temps finger mullet and shrimp have been the go to baits. Look for trout, redfish and black drum in the shallows throughout the day gathering warmth from the mud or sand bottom. The snook and mangrove snapper have been holding in the deeper waters looking for a easy meal.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The weather this past week or so for the holidays was definitely warmer than expected but made for some great outdoor activities. We had quite a bit of boat traffic throughout the New Smyrna Beach waters and Mosquito Lagoon over the holiday week. The fishing has continued to stay strong with several species coming boat side. We have had a little front come in to town to cool things down a bit which will only make the bite that much better. The shallow water bite for redfish, black drum and snook has been working well with artificials and live bait. Soft plastics , spoons and plugs have been working well and live finger mullet and live shrimp just as good. Looks like the weather should be stable for the few days making for the bite to continue to be strong.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 It has been a busy week on the water with a influx of anglers stemming from the holidays. The weather has also been a factor to the crowds because not many places have high 70’s and sunny skies during Christmas. The fishing continues to be good bringing in several different species this past week from redfish and trout to snook and black drum. The water has been very clean throughout the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon making for fun sight fishing. It looks like this weather will be hanging around for a while so it’s probably a good time to take advantage of calm conditions into 2022.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 It has definitely not felt like winter this past week and looking at the weather for next week it looks to continue on this trend. The fish were starting to get into a winter time pattern throughout Mosquito Lagoon until the weather took a turn and warmed the water temps back up. The same go’s for the New Smyrna Beach area as well , they have kinda fell back into a fall time pattern with food on their minds instead of survival. Look for the redfish , trout and black drum to be cruising the shallows looking for a easy meal. The snook can still be found hanging around and in structure along with sheepshead as well. Live shrimp, mud minnows and finger mullet have been working well. Since the water has warmed back up a bit plugs and spoons have been working well along with soft plastics for the artificial bite.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 Temperatures here in the New Smyrna Beach area have started to level off. Cool mornings and evenings with comfortable mid day temperatures has been making for pleasant fishing conditions. We have had some higher then average water conditions due to this recent low pressure dumping several inches of rain. Look for the fish to be holding in and around the bait in places the water is usually extremely low. Water temps are cooling a bit so if using artificials slow your retrieves a bit and smaller baits have been working well. Live bait has been working well also like pin fish, mullet and shrimp . The water clarity been fairly good throughout Mosquito Lagoon and if temperatures continue will only get better throughout winter.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 It seems as though our fall weather has started to move into the New Smyrna Beach area bringing a little crispier morning’s. We are still seeing a good amount of bait throughout the intracoastal and Mosquito Lagoon. As we move further into fall look for the water to clear up and the fish to start changing their patterns. Look for your redfish and trout to move into the pot holes and on shallow mud flats with bait. Small artificials along with shrimp and finger mullet work well this time of year and the upcoming months.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 I can’t believe we are already into October . The weather definitely is not Fall like with highs still in the 90’s . The bite here in New Smyrna Beach has continued to be good. We have been playing with snook, trout, redfish and jacks this past week. The mullet have shown up throughout Mosquito Lagoon and into New Smyrna Beach making for a unlimited food source at this moment. Plugs and soft plastics have been working well early morning and then moving to spoons and twitch baits later in the day. Live bait has also been working well and the baits of choice has been mullet , pin fish and shrimp. The forecast seems to be stable for the next week so I do not foresee a change in the bite.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 I hope everyone had a great Labor Day weekend taking in some much needed relaxation. They say Labor Day is the end of summer but here in Florida it doesn’t cool down until about January 😂. The bite continues to be good throughout the New Smyrna Beach area with several species coming boat side. The weather looks to be stable the rest of the week with possibilities of stormy weather coming from the Gulf by the weekend. I have noticed a good number of bait pods showing up both inshore and along the beaches. Focus on the pods of bait throwing both artificials and live bait . The jacks , tarpon and bonita have been lined up and down the beach focusing on the bait. The snook bite has been hit or miss, one day they are chewing and the next they turn their head up to everything.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The bite continues to hold strong throughout the New Smyrna Beach waters. We have been boating several different species over the past couple of weeks including redfish, trout, and snook. The bite has been better on live bait over artificials the las couple of weeks. Pin fish , pig fish and finger mullet have been doing the trick. Plugs and top water baits have been working well early before the water temps warm up then moving to a spoon or soft plastic later in the day. I do not see a change in the bite over the next few weeks as long the weather stays stable in the tropics and with that being said let’s keep our fingers crossed for no storms .
