With a little bit of a low pressure sitting off the coast the past couple of days, it has triggered a good bite on Mosquito Lagoon. The red fish and trout have been chewing well with the little bit of cloud cover the pressure has provided. The water clarity through out the Lagoon System from New Smyrna Beach south is still looking good. There is plenty of bait both inshore and off the beach which is a good sign of things to come.

The bite here on Mosquito Lagoon has been really good with great numbers of trout and redfish coming boat side. We have also started to see good numbers of tarpon and snook showing up daily. The water clarity is still holding well and making for good sight fishing as the sun gets up. With a variety of bait fish to choose from this time of year makes for a great selection to throw.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The fishing here on Mosquito Lagoon and New Smyrna Beach has been good this past week. We did get a little rain early last week that raised the water level and made it dirty for a few days. The water level seems to be slowly returning back to normal along with the clarity. With the fall mullet run in full swing look ahead to some good fishing.
Capt Patrick Rood Summer is definitely in full swing with air temps in the mid 90's here in Central Fl. But the weather is not the only thing that is hot at the moment. We have had some great fishing here in New Smyrna beach and Mosquito Lagoon area. The trout have been biting well with many double digit days. They can caught many different ways from plugs in the early morning to sub walks and live bait later in the day. Look for the bait holding around edges of the flats and you will find the trout.
The redfish bite has been good as well. I have found some great success starting the morning out on the shallow grass flats that are holding bait. Look for tailing fish or backing fish mixed in with the bait fish. I like to throw soft plastics or cut bait to them when they are shallow cruising. As the sun rises they will start to move off the shallows to the edges this is a good time to switch to a ADL spoon or live finger mullet to trigger a bite in a little deeper water. The snook bite has been very good as well in and around the New Smyrna Beach area. Look for the structure and moving water and you will find the snook.m they can be targeted several different ways but sub walks and live bait has been a good choice. The beaches from Daytona Beach south to Canaveral have started to come alive with bait pods. With bait pods come predator fish. They have been catching bonita , sharks, bull reds and the occasional tarpon off the beaches. If you decide to venture off the beach or near the inlets make sure you up size your gear there has been some bruisers out there. Good luck and be safe. Capt Patrick Rood (386) 566-1394 www.spotntailcharters.com The weather here in Central FL. has been beautiful for early May with highs in the mid 80's every day. It seems as though we are not the only ones enjoying this awesome weather as well because the bite has been pretty good here In Central East FL. The water clarity has improved greatly allowing for a better bites through the day. My clients have had multiple double digit days on both trout and red fish in the past couple of weeks . The trout have been chewing very well from New Smyrna Beach through Mosquito Lagoon and also along the Intracoastal of Daytona Beach. Look for the schools of bait on the grass flats early in the morning and as the sun gets up move to the deeper edges of the flat in about the two to three foot of water range. I like to throw plugs and jerk baits around the bait pods early and then switch over to a weighted soft plastic along with twitch baits as the day moves on. Live bait is always a good choice from live finger mullet to shrimp they have been eating both very well. I have found the redfish holding on the shallow grass flats for most of the day tailing and backing searching for a easy meal. The key is being as stealthy as possible mostly sticking to the poling platform or running the trolling motor on low not to spook them. I have been having great success on almost everything from plugs to Aqua Dream spoons for artificial, and shrimp, mullet and pin fish for live bait. Cut lady fish and cut mullet has also been a great go to bait as well. There has also been great numbers of bait moving into Mosquito lagoon north through Daytona witch has brought the jacks in with them. If you want a great fight there is not a fish out there that pound for pound fights better than a jack. Look around the docks and sea walls of Daytona and New Smyrna where ever there is bait holding on those structures and you will find them.We have also had some great numbers of flounder caught in and around Ponce Inlet and south through Edgewater, some reaching over ten pounds. They like the baits to be near the bottom so bouncing baits along the bottom is the trick whether its finger mullet or jumbo shrimp both will do the job. With all the life we have in the water right now it makes for a great time to go wet a line.
Good luck and be safe Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 Mosquito Lagoon, Daytona Beach and New Smyrna beach Fishing Report
The bite has been pretty good here on the Central East Coast of Florida even with the weather being abnormal for the last couple of weeks. The cold fronts have finally decided to show up and are helping out greatly by cleaning the waters of Mosquito lagoon and allowing some sight fishing to occur. The Redfish are starting to group up and will continue to do so as the water level continues to decrease. Look for them to be holding in the sand holes through out Mosquito lagoon and on the mud flats around the Daytona beach and New Smyrna Beach area. I have been having great success with ADL spoons and soft plastics through out the day and you can never go wrong sight fishing with a live shrimp or cut bait. The trout have been in great numbers through out Mosquito Lagoon with clients boating a lot of trophy size fish. Look for the trout to also hold in the sand holes and on the mud bars gathering warmth from the bottom. I like to target the trout a little later in the morning when the sun rises a little higher in the sky using twitch baits, soft plastics and live bait. We also have some large schools of black drum making residence in the lagoon right now with schools reaching over a hundred. Throwing shrimp and broke blue crab to these fish is always a great choice. the flounder bite has been good as well in our northern areas around New Smyrna and Daytona Beach. A soft plastic or live shrimp on a jig head bounced along the bottom always works well to produce a flatty. Good luck and Be safe ! Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)-566-1394 |
