It has been a busy week on the water with a influx of anglers stemming from the holidays. The weather has also been a factor to the crowds because not many places have high 70’s and sunny skies during Christmas. The fishing continues to be good bringing in several different species this past week from redfish and trout to snook and black drum. The water has been very clean throughout the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon making for fun sight fishing. It looks like this weather will be hanging around for a while so it’s probably a good time to take advantage of calm conditions into 2022.

The weather has been abnormally warmer than usual for this time of year throughout the Central Fl area. With the warmer weather also brings warmer water temps in the New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon backwaters. The warmer water temps have made for some more active fish cruising the flats and bars looking for a easy meal. The redfish, black drum, snook, trout and mangrove snapper have all been chewing well. Look for the mangroves and snook holding around structure and shorelines as the drum, redfish and trout have been cruising the flats of Mosquito Lagoon looking for easy meals . Artificials have been working but the live bait has been the key bait lately. Anything from live shrimp, finger mullet and pin fish for the snook, mangroves and trout. The redfish and black drum have been preferring the crab and shrimp for the most part. Water clarity has been good throughout the Lagoon making the sight fishing fun for the trout, redfish and black drum when the wind wants to cooperate to allow it. With the holidays in sight this next week and the weather looking warm and nice I foresee a lot of traffic on the water.
Happy Holidays and a New Year! Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 It has definitely not felt like winter this past week and looking at the weather for next week it looks to continue on this trend. The fish were starting to get into a winter time pattern throughout Mosquito Lagoon until the weather took a turn and warmed the water temps back up. The same go’s for the New Smyrna Beach area as well , they have kinda fell back into a fall time pattern with food on their minds instead of survival. Look for the redfish , trout and black drum to be cruising the shallows looking for a easy meal. The snook can still be found hanging around and in structure along with sheepshead as well. Live shrimp, mud minnows and finger mullet have been working well. Since the water has warmed back up a bit plugs and spoons have been working well along with soft plastics for the artificial bite.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The water clarity has cleaned up quite a bit over the last couple of weeks making sight fishing more enjoyable. We have also had a influx of water making for higher water conditions throughout the New Smyrna Beach area. The bait pods have been a little hard to find but when you do the game fish can be found mixed in with them. The trout , redfish and black drum have been holding in very shallow bays through the morning then moving out to a little deeper flats as the sun gets higher. Live shrimp and finger mullet have been working well along with soft plastics and spoons for artificials. It looks like we may have a low pressure with possible rain coming into the area later this week. If the rain does come it may dirty the water in Mosquito Lagoon fir a few days but clarity should come right back.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The fishing continues to be good here in the New Smyrna Beach area. The temperatures have started to drop making for some cleaner water conditions throughout the backwaters and Mosquito Lagoon. It was definitely a little busy out on the water last week do to the holiday but has gotten back to normal this week . The snook, redfish, trout and black drum have been roaming the flats looking for a easy meal. Live bait and artificials have both been working well. As the water temps continue to lower as winter moves forward the bite will continue to stay strong. It looks like we have stable ahead going into next week which will make for some good sight fishing in the shallows.
