The bite continues to be good throughout the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and south into Mosquito Lagoon. The water level has lowered quite a bit bringing a lot of the fish out of the ditches and on to the flats into schools and small groups.
We have been targeting black drum, redfish , snook and trout this past week and the weather has been great for it. Clear skies and clean water has produced the perfect storm of a bite. February is usually always a great month to sight fish and by the looks of it , I do not think it’s going to disappoint this year as well as we have been on a great bite so far. The bite has been great in the New Smyrna Beach waters after our Christmas freeze . The water clarity has become gin clear making for some epic sight fishing this past week. We have been bringing great numbers of black drum and redfish boat side this week. It looks as though we are having another little front coming across the state which will only make the bite better. The bait can still be found in great numbers throughout the New Smyrna waters and Mosquito Lagoon. Live shrimp , cut bait and finger mullet have all been working well along with spoons , soft plastics and sun walk hard baits as well.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The bite continues to be good throughout the waters of New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon. We have been boating a variety of species from redfish , trout , snook along with black drum and sheep head as well. The bait has been plenty full in the New Smyrna Beach backwaters. The water temps have definitely cooled down in Mosquito Lagoon and the surrounding waters. It looks like we have a major cold front coming into Central Florida Christmas weekend which should push a lot of these fish into even tighter groups making for a even better bite. Live bait and artificials have both been working well but the key is a slow presentation and down size in bait. I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The bite continues to be strong throughout the Central Florida waters from New Smyrna Beach south through Mosquito Lagoon. We have been boating some nice slams quite often over the past week, and with a couple of cold fronts coming in the near future the bite will continue to get better. The water levels are still a little higher then normal throughout the New Smyrna area but the clarity is looking good. There is still a good number of bait to be found on the flats of Mosquito Lagoon and that has been the focus for fish. Look for the pockets and flats holding bait and target them with either soft plastics, spoons or plugs . The live bait has also been working well with live shrimp and finger mullet being the go to baits.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The bite continues to be good throughout the New Smyrna Beach waters. We have had a couple trying days with very unstable weather with winds and rain but it still did not stop us from catching. We have been boating several different species from snook, redfish and trout to flounder and mangrove snapper. The water conditions are still a bit high but has been steadily dropping everyday. The clarity is good considering the amount of freshwater that has been introduced in the past month.
The fish have moved further up in the shallows and up on the shorelines looking for new food opportunities. The bait continues to be located throughout the flats of Mosquito Lagoon and the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach . Live shrimp and finger mullet have been working well along with artificials as well. The weather looks to be good for the up coming week which should only make the bite get better. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The bite this past week was good to say the least. My clients were mostly targeting redfish and managed to jump a couple of tarpon in the mix. Unfortunately Hurricane Nicole decided to pay a visit to Florida and bringing in strong wind and water to the Central FL coast. The intracoastal in New Smyrna Beach and Daytona Beach area did swell quite a bit but will flush back out just as fast as it arrived. Until the higher water levels disappear look for the fish to be in areas that usually are not accessible for them for new food sources. Spoons and plugs work well under high water conditions as you can cover a lot of water with them.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The Fall bite continues to be good throughout the Central Florida waters. We have been bringing several different species boat side from redfish and trout to snook and jacks. The water levels are continuing to drop post Hurricane Ian. The water clarity is also continuing to get better day by day as well. Look for the pods of bait working the shallows and running the shorelines in backwaters of New Smyrna Beach. The fish can be found mixed in and around these bait pods. Live finger mullet and shrimp along with plugs and soft plastics have been working well. It looks like the weather will continue to be stable into next week allowing these fish to get back to there patterns.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 Fall is definitely upon us with these much cooler mornings and speaking of cool next week looks like we could get a little cold blast. The fish are getting into their fall patterns and seem to be enjoying the cooler water temps here in the Central Florida area. We still have a little extra water throughout Mosquito Lagoon and the backwaters of New Smyrna but it seems to be getting back to normal levels. Look for the bait cruising down the edge of the shorelines and on top of the bars.
Redfish , trout , jacks and snook will all be in and around this bait. Plugs , shrimp and live finger mullet have been working well . The flounder have also started to move into the shallows from offshore ,soft plastics or mud minnows pinned on a jig head always works well. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 This past week has been trying to say the least. Hurricane Ian came to pay a visit to the state of Florida and definitely left his mark. It started on the west coast and worked its way across Central Florida dumping a astronomical amount of rain the whole time.
The bite has been a little bit of a challenge in the aftermath with a influx of fresh water flushing into the intracoastal by the gallons. It seems as though if you can find the bait and heavier salt concentration you will find the fish. Live bait and artificials have both been working well. We are transitioning into our fall time pattern over the next few weeks and it seems as the weather is starting to agree as well. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The bite has been pretty good throughout the New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon waters. We are coming off the back side of the full moon along with a lot of rain this past week has created higher then usual water conditions. The higher water has pushed the redfish and trout up into the shallows of the Lagoon for a chance at new food source. The recent rain fall has definitely got the tarpon active throughout the intracoastal and inlets. It looks like we may have a little system trying to start something over Central FL the next few days so the bite may slow a little if it dumps as much rain as they are calling for. But we do live in FL and the forecast is never the same within a hour.
