It’s starting to look like winter is in the past and Spring has arrived here in Central Florida. The weather has definitely been quite nice with temperatures in the 70’s I could ask for just a tad less wind but we can’t get spoiled. The waters in and around New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon have been streaming with life. We have been catching trout, redfish, snook and black drum to mention a few.
The bait can still be found throughout the waters and the fish have worked their way out of the depths back onto the flats . Plugs, soft plastics and spoons have been working well for artificial’s as shrimp, mud minnows and live mullet have been the key for live bait. The weather looks nice for the upcoming week which should definitely have the fish fired up. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394

It looks as though our winter weather will be here for most of this week with cooler nights and 60’s to 70 during the days. With this little blast of cool air coming into Central Florida look for the fish to become really active throughout the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon.
The water clarity has been great making for some good sight fishing of redfish and black drum . The bait can still be found hanging in and around the deeper edges and holes. Those holes and edges are where you will find most of your schooling trout as the larger ones will be gathering warmth in the shallow pot holes. Small soft plastics , spoons and live bait have all been working well to trigger a bite. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 There has been some shifting winds this past week bringing an influx of water into the back waters of New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon. As the wind and higher water does make it a little more challenging to fish in the fish are still there and they are still hungry.
Look for the bait to be pushed up a little closer to the shorelines and the fish not that far behind them. Soft plastics, twice baits , spoons and live bait have all been working well. This week the weather looks to be pretty stable making for some great sight fishing but as we get into the weekend it’s calling for some rainy days. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 We have had a roller coaster of weather this winter but the fish have enjoyed it. On the back side of the fronts the fish are eating everything but the kitchen sink. The bait continues to be plentiful throughout the New Smyrna Beach waters . Look for the fish to be holding in the sand holes and on the shallow mud flats gathering warmth from the bottom.
Finger mullet , live shrimp , soft plastics and spoons have been working well. We will be having a couple days of windy conditions but look for the fish to be extremely happy on the back side of this front. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 This recent cold front moving through Central FL has fired these fish up again. We have definitely got some cooler temperatures this week along with a shift in the wind direction lowering the water levels though out New Smyrna beach and Mosquito Lagoon.
With the lower cooler water look for the fish to be holding in the sand holes and on top the dark mud. Smaller baits like soft plastics , spoons , shrimp and finger mullet have been working well. This weather pattern looks to be here into the weekend making for some good fishing. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 We have had a little crazy weather pattern to start the new year and looks like it could continue into next week. Even with the crazy weather the fish have not stopped chewing as a matter of fact they have been very happy. The bait of choice has been live shrimp but cut bait and mullet have been working as well. Spoons and soft plastics will also trigger a bite but just need a slower then usual retrieval.
The water clarity throughout New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito lagoon has been great and will only continue to be through winter. Look for the fish to be in and around the bait pods either on the shallow flats or deeper holes. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 With the approaching cold front this week the weather will be turning a little nasty with some rain and strong winds. But after the clearing of the wind and rain will bring in some cooler stable conditions making for a great bite. Look for the fish to be holding on the mud and sand bottoms throughout the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon.
Depending on the water temperatures after this front they maybe a little sluggish early so cut bait and shrimp are always a good choice along with small soft plastics worked extremely slow . Don’t let the cooler temperatures scare you away this time of year makes for some of the best fishing. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The bite continued to be strong this past week on all categories from artificial to live bait. The redfish and trout have been hanging in and around the sand holes as the water temps have dropped a little after this recent cool front.
The wind has been a little bit of a nuisance but if you can find some bait and a leeward shoreline you will find some fish. Looks like we have another front possibly approaching over the weekend and into next week which will only reassure the pattern they have started. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 Recent trips have been yielding some great fish and great weather as well. With the recent cold fronts cooling temperatures down and shifting the wind direction it’s May for some great days on the water. The backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon continue to hold a great number of bait fish making for target areas to find game fish.
Plugs, spoons and soft plastics have been working well along with finger mullet and live shrimp. We have been boating redfish, trout , black drum and snook just to mention a few and from what I see now the winter bite is going to be just as good. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The bite continues to be strong this past week and with the approaching cold front this week it will only get better. The bait continues to be located on the flats and backwaters of New Smyrna Beach which has made a great location for the trout and redfish to hang out.
The sight fishing has also been good throughout Mosquito Lagoon in between the windy days this past week. Shrimp have been working well for sight fishing black drum along with the redfish as well. Cut bait and mullet has also been doing the trick along with artificials like plugs, spoons and soft plastics. Once again after this upcoming front this week the bite should only get better.
