The weather here in New Smyrna Beach has been a page out of the chamber of commerce book. We have had clear skies and mid 80’s the past few days and looks to continue to get warmer. We are still bringing several different species boat side from snook to black drum. Look for the snook and Jacks to be holding up north around the New Smyrna backwaters. Target structure and deeper shorelines with both artificial and live bait for best results. Further south throughout Mosquito Lagoon you can find red fish, trout and black drum. Look on the shallow flats that are holding bait early then move to the deeper edges as the day moves on. Shrimp, cut bait and soft plastics have been working well to trigger a bite.

Finally, after this last little blast of cool weather it seems as though the waters around New Smyrna Beach are getting to normal. The bite has been good with several different species coming boat side this past week. As the waters continue to warm the fish will start to get into their spring time patterns and the bait should start to show up in greater numbers.
Look for the redfish and trout cruising shorelines throughout Mosquito Lagoon. Artificials and live bait have both been working well. The trout still need a little patience’s with the slowly warming water temps. The snook and Jack bite has been good a little further north into New Smyrna Beach. Live shrimp and soft plastics have been getting bites around the structure holding fish. Looks as though the weather conditions will be leveling off and continuing to warm. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 Just when I thought we were all into Spring I look at the forecast and Winter wants to make another appearance. It looks as though a cold blast will be hitting us at the end of the week into the weekend making for windy and cooler conditions. The fishing has been good the past couple of weeks with the stable weather conditions. We have been bringing several snook, redfish and trout boat side. The full moon brought some larger tide swings making for some higher highs and lower lows as far as tides. Look for the bite to be a little tuff through this late front and increasing as the weather starts to stable. Artificials and live bait have both been working well. Plugs and spoons early early in the morning and then moving on to soft plastics as the day moves on. Live finger mullet and shrimp have also been working well both targeting shorelines and sand holes.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 It seems as though Mr Winter wanted to give us one last little blast this week. After all the wind from this passing front it has stirred up the bottom creating some dirty water conditions. It should be back to normal with in a few days. The water temps did drop a little bit in the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach causing the fish to go back to their winter time patterns. Look for the trout and snook to be holding in the deeper water until water temps rise again. The redfish seem to be hanging out in and around the pot holes throughout Mosquito Lagoon. The baits of choice has been shrimp, cut bait and small soft plastics. As the water and air temperatures rise later in the week the fish will start to work toward their Spring time habits.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The weather has been outstanding this past week and continues to look good here in New Smyrna Beach. The fish have been chewing well with many different species coming boat side like redfish, snook and trout to mention a few. The bite has been good on both artificial and live bait . Plugs , spoons and soft plastics have been working well in Mosquito Lagoon and north into Edgewater. Live bait has been more receptive in the New Smyrna Beach waters. Look for the bite to continue to stay strong as we move further into Spring.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 With Bike Week in full effect here in Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach that is definitely a sign of Spring is around the corner. With Spring around the corner brings a different bite. The water starts to warm just as the days do and the bait will start to show itself in better numbers. This is a good time for plugs, spoons, and soft plastics along with live shrimp and finger mullet. As the water temps continue to warm the fish will be more active. Look for the redfish and trout along the edges of the flats and pot holes throughout Mosquito Lagoon then moving up in the shallows as the day moves on. The snook , jacks and mangrove snapper have been holding in the deeper water throughout the New Smyrna backwaters.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The bite has been good these past weeks and should continue to only get better here in the New Smyrna Beach area. We have been boating a mixed bag of redfish, trout , flounder and snook. They have been eating both artificials and live bait. It seems as though live finger mullet and mud minnows have been the got baits for redfish , trout and flounder where as the snook have been more focused on live shrimp. We still have some large groups throughout Mosquito Lagoon and have been chewing well on both shrimp and blue crab. As the weeks move forward toward the start of Spring I believe the bite will continue to be good.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The bite throughout New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon continues to be good. We have been bringing a mixed bag of species boat side the last couple of weeks. From trout, redfish and snook to flounder, black drum and mangrove snapper. It seems as though the redfish and black drum are feeding better on the shallow flats of Mosquito Lagoon where as the trout and snook prefer the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach. All species have been feeding both on artificial and live bait. It looks as though we will be receiving another cold front this weekend bringing the temps back down into the 40’s at night. But it also looks as though it will be short lived and the 70’s will be right back.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 It looks as though we are on a warming trend at least for the next week or so. The bite continues to be good throughout the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon. We have been targeting redfish, snook, black drum and trout this past week. As the week moves forward the water temps will increase and should only continue to keep producing a good bite. The choice of bait has been Live finger mullet, shrimp and cut bait along with soft plastics and twitch baits . It seems as though the majority of the fish have been holding among the bait pods. If you can find the pods of bait most likely there are some game fish in the mix of them.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The bite continues to be good throughout the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon. The good days have been all about timing. We are on our winter time pattern bringing fronts across Central FL every four to five days or so. The key has been to be on the water a couple days after the fronts move through making for the most stable weather and best bite. We have been boating trout, redfish, snook, black drum and the occasional flounder on both live bait and artificial. Live finger mullet and shrimp have been working well targeting redfish and trout in the pot holes . Soft plastics and twitch baits have been triggering a bite along deeper shorelines for snook and the occasional flounder. Look for the weather to stable toward the end of the week and the bite to continue to increase.
