The backwaters of New Smyrna Beach have really came alive in the past few weeks. We have a great number of bait pods flowing through the area along with a good shrimp run this last month as well. With all this bait brings game fish and they have been chewing well. The red fish have been cruising shorelines throughout Mosquito Lagoon and with the good water clarity we have at the moment spotting them has been a breeze. We still have some large schools of black drum and a great number of trout as well looking for easy prey across the flats of Mosquito Lagoon. Further north into the waters of New Smyrna Beach we have been invaded by schools of jacks and blue fish which always make for a fun fight. Pitching both live and artificial baits around the structure will also produce several other species as well like snook, redfish, trout and flounder. They say the UV light kills the corona virus so what better way to social distance and cleanse yourself with the suns UV’s then a day of fishing.

The dog days of summer are approaching quickly making for some great fishing in New Smyrna Beach. We have tons of bait throughout Mosquito Lagoon making for a good bite. The trout , redfish and jacks have been raising havoc on the pods of bait. The snook bite has been good in the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach . Early morning plug fishing had been very productive around the oyster bars. The water clarity is still looking great making for some great sight fishing through Mosquito Lagoon. The redfish and trout have been very receptive to live finger mullet along with a variety of artificials. I Have some days available this week if you are looking to social distance yourself on the water or get rid of the cabin fever.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 My clients and I have been practicing a lot of good social distancing this past week on Mosquito Lagoon. The fish have been chewing well with a large number of bait pods gathering from New Smyrna Beach south through Mosquito Lagoon. We have also had a really good shrimp run the last couple of weeks which the trout and snook have been taking advantage of. The winds had shifted the other day to the south east raising the water levels a little . With the higher water the redfish have been cruising the shorelines looking for new feeding opportunities. The bite has also been good and should only continue to get better throughout the New Smyrna Beach backwaters. Earlier in the week we targeted the oysters throughout the backwaters bringing in a great mixed bag from
snook, redfish, trout, flounder, jacks and bluefish. Look for the April afternoon showers to start this coming week throwing the fish into their spring time pattern. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The weather has been outstanding this past week in the New Smyrna beach area. With all this perfect weather has also brought some outstanding fishing as well. We have had a major shrimp run this past week bringing a influx of bait to the area. The snook , redfish and trout have been chewing well with several coming boat side. It looks like we will getting a late front toward the end of the week bringing a little bit of wind and rain with it. I do not see the bite being affected in Mosquito Lagoon or New Smyrna beach area by the passing front. With all the craziness in this world going on it’s so nice to get some peace and tranquility on the water and catching fish is just a bonus.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 With the Coronavirus in full swing throughout the whole world it has brought a stand still to life in general. Travel has stopped, restaurants have changed to take out only and some businesses have just closed completely. For me to say that this is not a concerning time in the world right now would be a understatement. There is some great things that I have seen out of this whole pandemic. I have families come together and actually spend time with one another. I have seen large corporations stop thinking of the almighty dollar and switch gears to help a nation in need. I have seen pro athletes write checks to help support the workers in the stadiums that they play in. I have been sanitizing my boat and gear every time it’s used and practicing safe distancing as well. Fortunately the fish are unaware of a pandemic and still continue to chew . There has been a good number of bait throughout Mosquito Lagoon and north into New Smyrna Beach . The water clarity is still good and should be even better after this little front passing in the next day or so. Good luck and be safe!
