New Smyrna Beach,Daytona Beach and Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report
March 2014 The harsh winter weather has started to lay down and looks like spring is right around the corner . We have a shrimp run going on right now in the north lagoon with some good size shrimp being dip just keep a eye on the tide chart to be there at the right time. As far as the fishing it has been very good lately with large schools of red fish and great numbers of trout roaming the waters of New Smyrna and Mosquito Lagoon. I have been catching both species on artificial and live bait. For the red fish a ADL spoon has been the ticket along with smaller soft plastics on a weighted hook and for live bait live mullet , shrimp and cut bait has done the trick also. The trout have been a little more picky with the crystal clear water you will need to make long cast and slow retrieves for this I like a weighted jerk bait or a sub surface twitch bait. A frre lined live shrimp or live finger mullet will also do the trick. We have also had some good numbers of sheep head and flounder in the back waters of Daytona Beach and Edgewater area. Look for the sheep head to be holding on the structure whether it is oyster beds or rock walls. I like to throw shrimp on a weighted hook . The flounder have been holding on the sand and mud bottom throwing a small soft plastic on a jig head or a mud minnow bounced along the bottom is a good choice. Good luck and be safe Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394
