The weather has definitely made a turn for the better this past week and looks to be sticking around through this week as well. With the warmer temperatures hitting us here in the Central Florida area it has really turned the fish on . The water has warmed up a bit pushing the bait up on the shallow flats and making the game fish follow.
The trout and redfish have been hanging along the edges of the shallow grass flats where as the black drum can be found in the larger sand holes throughout Mosquito Lagoon. We still have a large number of blue fish throughout the waters of New Smyrna Beach along with some snook that are starting to play. The bite has been good overall and with stable weather for a while it looks like it could continue for a little bit. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394

It’s starting to look like winter is in the past and Spring has arrived here in Central Florida. The weather has definitely been quite nice with temperatures in the 70’s I could ask for just a tad less wind but we can’t get spoiled. The waters in and around New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon have been streaming with life. We have been catching trout, redfish, snook and black drum to mention a few.
The bait can still be found throughout the waters and the fish have worked their way out of the depths back onto the flats . Plugs, soft plastics and spoons have been working well for artificial’s as shrimp, mud minnows and live mullet have been the key for live bait. The weather looks nice for the upcoming week which should definitely have the fish fired up. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 It seems as though we have finally hit a plateau of some nice weather for this upcoming week here in New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon. We still have some cooler nights which is great with some low 80’s mid day.
The fishing has continued to be good with a mixed bag of species from redfish and trout to snook and black drum. We have also been catching them on several different baits from artificial to live bait and even cut bait. I do not see the bite slacking off anytime soon. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 It looks as though our winter weather will be here for most of this week with cooler nights and 60’s to 70 during the days. With this little blast of cool air coming into Central Florida look for the fish to become really active throughout the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon.
The water clarity has been great making for some good sight fishing of redfish and black drum . The bait can still be found hanging in and around the deeper edges and holes. Those holes and edges are where you will find most of your schooling trout as the larger ones will be gathering warmth in the shallow pot holes. Small soft plastics , spoons and live bait have all been working well to trigger a bite. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 There has been some shifting winds this past week bringing an influx of water into the back waters of New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon. As the wind and higher water does make it a little more challenging to fish in the fish are still there and they are still hungry.
Look for the bait to be pushed up a little closer to the shorelines and the fish not that far behind them. Soft plastics, twice baits , spoons and live bait have all been working well. This week the weather looks to be pretty stable making for some great sight fishing but as we get into the weekend it’s calling for some rainy days. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 We have had a roller coaster of weather this winter but the fish have enjoyed it. On the back side of the fronts the fish are eating everything but the kitchen sink. The bait continues to be plentiful throughout the New Smyrna Beach waters . Look for the fish to be holding in the sand holes and on the shallow mud flats gathering warmth from the bottom.
Finger mullet , live shrimp , soft plastics and spoons have been working well. We will be having a couple days of windy conditions but look for the fish to be extremely happy on the back side of this front. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 This recent cold front moving through Central FL has fired these fish up again. We have definitely got some cooler temperatures this week along with a shift in the wind direction lowering the water levels though out New Smyrna beach and Mosquito Lagoon.
With the lower cooler water look for the fish to be holding in the sand holes and on top the dark mud. Smaller baits like soft plastics , spoons , shrimp and finger mullet have been working well. This weather pattern looks to be here into the weekend making for some good fishing. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 It looks like we have light at the end of our crazy weather tunnel this week. We will be getting on a warm trend throughout Central FL starting this week which will continue to make these fish active. The water clarity has been great throughout Mosquito Lagoon making for some great sight fishing.
The snook and trout are still holding in the deeper water with the cooler water temps but the black drum and redfish can be found milling up in the shallows. Shrimp , cut bait and live finger mullet have been working well but spoons and soft plastics have been getting ate too. I’m looking forward to a little warmer days and a continued great bite. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 We have had a little crazy weather pattern to start the new year and looks like it could continue into next week. Even with the crazy weather the fish have not stopped chewing as a matter of fact they have been very happy. The bait of choice has been live shrimp but cut bait and mullet have been working as well. Spoons and soft plastics will also trigger a bite but just need a slower then usual retrieval.
The water clarity throughout New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito lagoon has been great and will only continue to be through winter. Look for the fish to be in and around the bait pods either on the shallow flats or deeper holes. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 With the approaching cold front this week the weather will be turning a little nasty with some rain and strong winds. But after the clearing of the wind and rain will bring in some cooler stable conditions making for a great bite. Look for the fish to be holding on the mud and sand bottoms throughout the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon.
Depending on the water temperatures after this front they maybe a little sluggish early so cut bait and shrimp are always a good choice along with small soft plastics worked extremely slow . Don’t let the cooler temperatures scare you away this time of year makes for some of the best fishing. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 |
