With the recent afternoon showers covering the Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach coastlines the influx of rain water has cooled the water temperatures down to normal. We have been seeing 91 degree water temps into the shallows of Mosquito Lagoon this past week making for some very lethargic fish . Now the water temps have cooled the fish are way more aggressive with great numbers coming boat side this week.
The schools of bait have been plenty full throughout the backwaters and across the flats of Mosquito Lagoon. The fish have been mixed in with the bait in the early mornings and then moving to the deeper edges as the sun gets higher. Live bait has been working well along with soft plastics and spoons for the late morning bites.it looks as though our afternoon showers will be continuing through the weekend which will only make the bite better. The days have been scalding hot here in the New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon area with highs in the upper 90’s and heat index over 100. With this extreme heat covering most of Central FL and lack of rain this past week it has caused the water temperatures to sky rocket into the 90’s in the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and the shallow flats of Mosquito Lagoon.
With the extreme water temps the fish have been getting pretty lethargic by mid morning make for a much better early bite. The bait is in full force throughout the waters from Daytona Beach south into the Lagoon. The trout and redfish have moved more to the deeper edges in and around the bait pods. The snook and jacks are still hanging around the deeper structure and the tarpon are not to far away as well. The artificial bite has slowed a little with most of the strikes coming early morning and the same with the live bait as well . It looks as though we have some rain moving in later this week which should cool our water temps down a bit and making these fish more active throughout the day. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The bite has continued to be strong after the influx of holiday boat traffic that had scattered from Daytona Beach south through New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon for the Forth of July . The bait pods continue to be throughout the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach making for some great trout and redfishing . The snook and jacks have also been active and can be found chasing bait along the shorelines.
The grass flats of Mosquito Lagoon has also been alive with bait and with bait brings predators. The trout and redfish have been hanging in and around the pods of bait throughout the Lagoon. Plugs , spoons and soft plastics have been working and the live bait like pin fish , mullet and shrimp have been even better. It looks as though we are in our summer time weather pattern throughout Central Florida with afternoon showers usually stretching from Daytona Beach south into New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon on a daily basis. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The New Smyrna Beach and mosquito Lagoon area has been in much need of some rain and it seems that it has arrived. With the recent rains it has really triggered a solid trout bite this past week with double digit days . The red fish and snook are still plentiful both in the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and also in the shallows of Mosquito Lagoon.
Both live bait and artificials have been working well. Using plugs early then switching to soft plastics and spoons has been creating a steady bite where as live bait like pinfish and mullet has been almost guarantee bite. It looks as though we will continue a rain pattern moving into the holiday weekend which will only secure the continued bite. I hope everyone has a safe and happy Fourth of July ! Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The weather here in New Smyrna Beach , Daytona Beach and South into Mosquito Lagoon has heated up but so has the fishing . There has been some scorchers this past week but that bite continues to only get stronger. The backwaters of New Smyrna Beach is thriving with bait and the grass flats of Mosquito Lagoon is the same . Look for the bait pods and the game fish will be there as well . Live bait has been working well like pin fish , mullet and shrimp . The early morning has been producing a good top water plug bite and as the sun gets higher switching over to a soft plastic or a spoon has been working well for artificial. It looks as though the extended forecast is showing summer is here to stay but no complaints here with the bite that we are having.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 This past holiday week has been some banner fishing from Daytona Beach south into New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon. It has definitely been some summer conditions with warm days and afternoon showers to cool things off for the evening. The bait has been plentiful both north around the oyster beds in New Smyrna area and south across the shallow grass flats of Mosquito Lagoon.
Look for the redfish and trout to be holding in and around the scattered bait. Plugs , soft plastics and spoons have all been working well for an artificial bite . If live bait is more your style look to pinfish , shrimp or finger mullet for a consistent bite. It looks as though we will be heading into this week with the summer time pattern of afternoon storms which will only increase the bite by cooling the water temps down a bit. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 I definitely believe summer is here in the Central Florida area with the past few days in the mid to upper 90’s . Although it’s been a bit toasty the weather hast been the only thing that’s been hot . We have had a good bite from Daytona Beach south into New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon.
We have been boating some nice trout , redfish and snook along with the occasional large Jack . Targeting the oyster beds and shorelines though out the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach area has been working well ,with live bait and artificials both doing the trick. The grass flats of Mosquito Lagoon have been alive with life like mullet and pinfish , which both have been working well to trigger a bite. It looks as though clear skies are in store into this week with a high pressure sitting over Florida keeping the rain away. The bite should continue into next week as not much looks to be in for change. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 We have been dealing with a lack of rain over the last few months on the East Coast of Florida from Daytona Beach south to New Smyrna Beach and including the Mosquito Lagoon area. This past weekend I believe has made up for lost time with several inches of rain coming down over a few days.
We have been focusing on the bait pods along the deeper grass flat edges in Mosquito Lagoon and along the oyster edges up near New Smyrna . Top water plugs and spoons have been working well early then moving to live finger mullet and pinfish later in the day. It looks as though our summer time pattern is trying to set in as the forecast is calling for afternoon storms into next week. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The lack of rain and shifting winds from the south has brought a little dirty water into the north end of Mosquito Lagoon and the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach . The fish are still there and seem to be mixed in with the pods of bait that are scattered over the shallow grass flats of the Lagoon and oyster flats to the north. It looks as though this upcoming week is calling for afternoon showers in the New Smyrna Beach area stretching south through Mosquito Lagoon into Titusville.
The change in wind direction with the approaching afternoon storms should move a lot of the dirty water out bringing in cleaner water. They have been chewing both artificials and live bait this past week . Plugs , soft plastics and spoons have all been producing bites along with live finger mullet , shrimp and cut bait . It looks as though we are getting into our summer time pattern with the weatherman calling for afternoon storms the rest of the week into next week. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 Summer's Early Arrival: Bait Migration Triggers Multi-Species Explosion in New Smyrna Waters5/1/2025 I believe summer is definitely upon us here in central Florida as the days get earlier and last longer. The weather has definitely started to warm and with the warmer weather comes warmer water temperatures throughout New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon. The warmer water temps have started to push bait up on the shallow grass flats of Mosquito Lagoon enticing game fish like trout and redfish to follow.
Further north into the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and Daytona Beach the deeper shorelines and oyster bars seem to be alive with several species from snook , black drum , jacks ,trout and redfish to mention a few. Live bait and artificials have been working well both shallow and in the deeper water as well. It looks as the weather will be holding steady for the upcoming week with possible showers mid next week. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 |
