With strong tide swings from the full moon this week along with large amounts of bait scattered from New Smyrna Beach through Mosquito Lagoon the fish have been active. The redfish and trout bite have been good in and around the bait pods. The snook bite has been good as well in and around structures with moving water. We still have our tarpon hanging around in the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach along with the occasional large school of jacks and blue fish.

Fall is around the corner but unfortunately you can not tell by the weather here in New Smyrna Beach. We are still getting highs in the mid 90’s and the water temps in Mosquito Lagoon are not to far from that as well. But with all that complaining about the heat it has not affected the bite at all. We are in the middle of a fall mullet run here in New Smyrna Beach and the game fish are taking full advantage of it. The snook and trout have been chewing good mixed in with asl the Bait pods. The redfish bite has been good as well around the inlets but you may want to take a number because it has been pretty busy out there.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 It looks like we will be dodging a bullet from hurricane Florence here in Central FL. We have had so much rain this spring and summer if we get hit with any kind of tropical weather here in New Smyrna Beach we maybe under water. Luckily with the storm moving north the fishing will continue to be good in and around Mosquito Lagoon. We still have a good trout bite and the redfish are starting to get in there pre spawn routine. The tarpon are still hanging around the Lagoon and New Smyrna Beach backwaters along with their friend Mr Snook . Also look for good numbers of flounder to start moving into the inlets and backwaters in the upcoming weeks. All of them have been chewing live bait really good and the redfish and trout have been eating artificials as well. Starting the morning out with surface plugs for them is always a good choice. As the day moves on switch over to spoons and plastics throwing in and around the bait pods that are holding over the grass flats. The snook and tarpon bites have been better early morning or late evening going into the night. They both like moving water especially snook. Live pinfish and finger mullet have been working well for both but a subsurface plug has been fooling them as well.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 It’s hard to believe that we are now in the month of September. With that being said September is usually our busiest time of year for storms such as hurricanes and tropical weather. There are some storms out in the Atlantic now and hopefully they will just sizzle out because Central FL definitely does not need anymore rain. In between the daily storms here in New Smyrna Beach the fishing has been good with a steady flow of bait through out the backwaters and Mosquito Lagoon. The trout have been chewing along with the redfish as well. Both have been receptive to plugs early then moving to soft plastics and spoons later in the day. They have also been eating live bait like pig fish and mullet as well. September 1st was the start of Snook season here on the East Coast and due to the recent water conditions on the West Coast they will remain closed in certain counties. Plugs and live bait early morning on a good moving tide is always your best shot at that slot size line sider. We also still have a good number of tarpon hanging out in the New Smyrna Beach area and just like the snook the bite has been best early or late evening on sub walks and live bait.
