This past week along with Memorial Day Weekend was a scorcher with highs in the mid 90’s. The temperatures were not the only hot thing in the New Smyrna Beach area though , as the bite on Mosquito Lagoon was just as hot. As the week went on it definitely increased in boat traffic but retreating to the backwaters was the key.
Finding the bait pods and targeting the edges has been working well for the trout and redfish as the deeper shorelines have been holding a good number of snook, mangrove snapper and jacks . As we move into this up coming week things will get back to normal boat traffic and the bite should only get better. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394

Headlong into the Memorial Day weekend with what looks to be good weather and some good fishing. The bite continues to be solid throughout the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and south into Mosquito Lagoon.
The water clarity continues to be great and the bait has really started to move up into the shallows. Look for the redfish and trout to be holding in and around the bait pods searching for an easy meal. The snook and jacks have been holding in a little deeper water both in the backwaters and intracoastal. Live bait, cut bait and artificials have all been working well . It will be busy on the water this weekend so please be safe. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The weather has started to get into its summer time pattern here on the East Coast of Florida with the hit days and afternoon showers. Looking at the extended forecast for the Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach area it’s calling for chances of afternoon showers into next week. The weather has not been the only thing hot here in Central Florida the bite has been as well. With the bait moving throughout the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and into Mosquito Lagoon the game fish are following.
Look for the trout and redfish to be holding in and around the bait pods . The black drum can still be found in the shallow sand holes and mud flats feeding in crustaceans. The snook have been holding on deeper shorelines and around structure that has had a constant flow of moving water with bait near by. The redfish, trout and snook have been very receptive to both live bait and artificials . The black drum have been focusing on shrimp the past few weeks. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 Highs in the nineties and clear skies tells me that summer has arrived here in Central Florida. The temperatures have definitely been hot but so has the bite. The redfish , trout and black drum have been chewing well with the occasional snook in the mix as well. The flats and backwaters of New Smyrna Beach have been alive with bait fish and game fish.
Targeting the shorelines and oyster beds in the north have been working well with both artificials and live bait. Moving south into Mosquito Lagoon the shallow grass flats have been holding a lot of fish and live bait has been working well when presented correctly. As we move further into summer our days will continue to heat up creating afternoon showers . These showers will in return cool our afternoons down along with cool the water temps down a bit. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 We have had a high pressure sitting over FL for the last week or so producing clear sunny days and lack of rain. The only down fall is it has also brought some strong winds these past few days. The wind has not affected the bite though , with several species like redfish, trout, black drum and snook still chewing.
The bait has worked its way up on to the shallow grass flats and oyster bars and the fish are not far away. When conditions allow plugs, spoons and soft plastics have been working well along with live and cut bait as well. These winds sure continue to decrease as the week moves on making for some great sight fishing. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 |
