The bite throughout the New Smyrna Beach backwaters continues to be good. With the reassuring fronts this past week the fish have maintained their winter time patterns. We have had schools of black drum and redfish working the flats of Mosquito Lagoon along with numbers of trout and snook in the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach. This is definitely one of my favorite times of year to fish between the awesome weather and happy fish it always makes for an enjoyable day on the water.

The fishing continues to be good throughout the Central FL waters from New Smyrna Beach south to Mosquito Lagoon. With the cooler water temps the water clarity has been excellent making for some great sight fishing. The redfish and black drum have been chewing great in the cooler water and as the water starts to warm later in the week the trout and snook should turn on as well. We still have a good number of bait throughout the New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon waters. As the week moves on the air temps and water temps will only increase and should reassure the bite.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The bite has been great in the New Smyrna Beach waters after our Christmas freeze . The water clarity has become gin clear making for some epic sight fishing this past week. We have been bringing great numbers of black drum and redfish boat side this week. It looks as though we are having another little front coming across the state which will only make the bite better. The bait can still be found in great numbers throughout the New Smyrna waters and Mosquito Lagoon. Live shrimp , cut bait and finger mullet have all been working well along with spoons , soft plastics and sun walk hard baits as well.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 Fishing in New Smyrna Beach, Florida is an unforgettable experience. The vast and varied waters of the area provide anglers with a great variety of fish species to target. Whether you’re looking for large gamefish such as red drum, snook, tarpon, and grouper or small baitfish like sardines and shiners, there is something for every level of angler.
The clear waters and sandy beaches provide great sight fishing opportunities. Fishermen can observe the gamefish they are targeting on the surface or just below it, allowing them to plan their approach accordingly. Redfish in particular can be spotted tailing in the shallows near the surf line during low tides when they come in to feed. Fishermen can also find plenty of deepwater species in the deeper parts of New Smyrna Beach's many channels and cuts. Inshore artificial reefs, wrecks, and hard bottom areas also attract an abundance of sea life which attracts even larger game fish like sailfish and king mackerel during certain times of year. Offshore reefs located far out to sea bring even more marine life close to shore giving fisherman access to a greater variety of saltwater species. In addition to all the species found in these inshore and offshore locations, several docks offer up excellent dock fishing spots where anglers can target several different species depending on the time of day and season. Mangrove snapper, sheepshead, red drum, flounder, cobia and various other bottom-dwelling species are regularly caught by fishermen fishing around these structures. No matter what type of fisherman you are - from fly fisherman searching for snook along the shorelines or big game enthusiast targeting large predators offshore - New Smyrna Beach has something for everyone who wants to enjoy some great saltwater fishing! The Mosquito Lagoon is a world-renowned fishing destination. With an abundance of Redfish, Trout, Tarpon, Snook, and other species, it’s easy to see why anglers flock to the area.
The lagoon is best known for its Redfish, with the most successful method being sight-fishing with artificial lures. Most of the Redfish are under 27 inches long, making them catch-and-release targets, but some over-slot fish can be found as well. Trout fishing is also very popular, and large Speckled Trout can be caught using a variety of live baits and artificial lures. If you’re looking for a little more excitement, then try your hand at catching Tarpon. These majestic fish can reach lengths up to 8 feet and provide an unforgettable experience when hooked. Lastly, there are plenty of Snook lurking in the shallow water around the mangroves. Live bait works best for these tasty gamefish. Whether you’re a serious angler or just a casual fisherman, the Mosquito Lagoon has something for everyone. The bite continues to be good throughout the waters of New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon. We have been boating a variety of species from redfish , trout , snook along with black drum and sheep head as well. The bait has been plenty full in the New Smyrna Beach backwaters. The water temps have definitely cooled down in Mosquito Lagoon and the surrounding waters. It looks like we have a major cold front coming into Central Florida Christmas weekend which should push a lot of these fish into even tighter groups making for a even better bite. Live bait and artificials have both been working well but the key is a slow presentation and down size in bait. I hope everyone has a safe and happy holiday.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The bite continues to be strong throughout the Central Florida waters from New Smyrna Beach south through Mosquito Lagoon. We have been boating some nice slams quite often over the past week, and with a couple of cold fronts coming in the near future the bite will continue to get better. The water levels are still a little higher then normal throughout the New Smyrna area but the clarity is looking good. There is still a good number of bait to be found on the flats of Mosquito Lagoon and that has been the focus for fish. Look for the pockets and flats holding bait and target them with either soft plastics, spoons or plugs . The live bait has also been working well with live shrimp and finger mullet being the go to baits.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The bite continues to be good throughout the New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon waters. We have had plenty of bait scattered across the flats and along the shorelines. The only challenge has been the extra amount of water that is still slowly working it’s way out. With the extra water throughout the Central Florida waters it has allowed the fish new feeding opportunities so look for them to be tucked up tight against the shorelines. Mullet and shrimp have been working well along with spoons and soft plastics as well. The weather looks to be good for the rest of the week which should continue to make for a good bite.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The bite continues to be good throughout the New Smyrna Beach waters. We have had a couple trying days with very unstable weather with winds and rain but it still did not stop us from catching. We have been boating several different species from snook, redfish and trout to flounder and mangrove snapper. The water conditions are still a bit high but has been steadily dropping everyday. The clarity is good considering the amount of freshwater that has been introduced in the past month.
The fish have moved further up in the shallows and up on the shorelines looking for new food opportunities. The bait continues to be located throughout the flats of Mosquito Lagoon and the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach . Live shrimp and finger mullet have been working well along with artificials as well. The weather looks to be good for the up coming week which should only make the bite get better. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The bite this past week was good to say the least. My clients were mostly targeting redfish and managed to jump a couple of tarpon in the mix. Unfortunately Hurricane Nicole decided to pay a visit to Florida and bringing in strong wind and water to the Central FL coast. The intracoastal in New Smyrna Beach and Daytona Beach area did swell quite a bit but will flush back out just as fast as it arrived. Until the higher water levels disappear look for the fish to be in areas that usually are not accessible for them for new food sources. Spoons and plugs work well under high water conditions as you can cover a lot of water with them.
