The winter time fishing in New Smyrna Beach backwaters has been good and with this securing cool fronts this week it will be even better. With the shifting winds and cool temperatures coming into Central Florida look for the water levels to start to lower and fish to gather making for some great sight fishing opportunities.
The redfish and black drum have been and will continue to be holding in and around the shallow sand holes throughout the Mosquito Lagoon . Look for the snook and trout to start moving into the deeper holes and shorelines as the water temps start to drop over the upcoming week. This is definitely one of my favorite times of year to fish the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and the shallow waters of Mosquito Lagoon as the fish tend to be very happy as the water temps cool down. Do not neglect the deeper waters of the intracoastal throughput the Daytona Beach area as well . The snook , trout ,redfish and other species like to hold of the deeper mud throughout the Intracoastal. Weather looks to be good into next week so get out and bend a rod. The fishing in the New Smyrna Beach waters this past week has been like the weather a little unstable . It had started out a little tuff with a windy cold front moving some fish around but as the week moved on so did the weather . With this steady forecast through next week the fish seem to be happy throughout the New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon waters.
With the recent cool down the mullet have moved into deeper waters like the Intracoastal from Daytona Beach south through Titusville. The shrimp have been flowing pretty well especially with the recent full moon pushing these fish more to a shrimp bite . Look for the trout and snook holding in the deeper waters in and around the bait pods as the redfish and black drum can be found in the shallows searching out the crustaceans. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 This past week has had some chamber of commerce days both on and off the water. Central Florida has seen mid to upper 70’s with clear skies and cool evenings make for some great fishing on the New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito lagoon waters. The backwaters of New Smyrna and Daytona Beach have been producing some great sheep’s head, snook and trout bites as where Mosquito Lagoon has been magical with tailing redfish and black drum.
The artificial bite has been ok but with the recent shrimp run going on you can not go wrong with a nice select shrimp . With the cold front county into play it will bring some gusty conditions for a day or two but should only secure the already good bite for the week to come. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The Mosquito Lagoon fishing has not disappointed this past week with some great bites on several species. The weather has been a little weird with wind and cold then back to warm but the fish have adjusted well . The extended forecast going into next week looks pretty stable and should only secure the bite throughout the waters of New Smyrna Beach . The redfish , black drum and trout have been hanging in and around the bait pods in the shallows . As for the snook they have been lingering around structure in the deeper waters and shorelines . We have had a fairly good shrimp run this past week which has made these fish more for us on a live shrimp or a shrimp pattern artificial. Spoons and live finger mullet have been working as well.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The New Smyrna Beach fishing has been good this past week even with the weird weather the last few days. The fish are definitely starting to set into their winter time patterns with the trout finding the sand holes shallow in the Mosquito Lagoon and deeper ledges further north throughout Edgewater and New Smyrna Beach.
The redfish and black drum can be found cruising the shallow sand and mud bottoms looking for an easy meal as the snook have focused more on the deeper shorelines. We have had a pretty good shrimp run this past week and it seems as though these fish are really focused on either live shrimp or an artificial in a shrimp pattern. It looks as though we will be on a warming trend through Christmas which may move these fish a little depending on how warm the water gets , we will have to see. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 We have had a great week of fishing New Smyrna Beach waters and with this cooler weather coming in this week should be just as good. The redfish and black drum have been working between the sand holes throughout Mosquito Lagoon in search of shrimp and crabs.
The trout and snook have started to move toward a little deeper water mixing in with the bait pods . As the water continues to cool the deeper pockets will be where they can be found. We have had a good shrimp run this past week so they have really been focused on the shrimp but the live finger mullet have been working well also . I’m sure artificial’s in a shrimp pattern and mullet pattern would work as well . It looks as though we are going to have some chilly nights this week so we will have to see how much it will cool the water temps. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 Fishing in New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon continues to be good with several different species coming boat side . The bait is still spread out over the oyster bars in Daytona Beach and moving southward across the shallow flats of Mosquito Lagoon.
The redfish and trout can be found mixed throughout the bait pods looking for an easy meal. The black drum have really started to make an appearance milling around on the shallow mud and sand bottoms. The snook have also been active along the deeper shorelines looking to ambush an easy meal. Artificials have been working well in the shallows but live bait has been a more consistent choice. The weather looks to be stable for the up coming week so the bite should continue to be strong. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 With the Holidays in full swing and the weather cooling down it’s definitely the time for a charter fishing trip in New Smyrna Beach waters. The water levels have finally lowered back to normal and the fish seem to be staging in there Fall weather routines. The bait pods are spread across the shallow grass of Mosquito Lagoon and the trout and the redfish mixed in with them. The black drum can be found milling around on the shallow mud and sand bottoms pushing shrimp and crabs out for a meal. With another cold front on the horizon it will just continue to secure these fish into their Fall patterns throughout the Daytona Beach and Mosquito Lagoon backwaters.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 After this recent cold front last week that dipped down south of Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach bringing the first cold blast of the year the water conditions have changed. The shifting winds has lowered water levels throughout the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon . Along with lower water levels has also brought cooler water temperatures pushing these fish into their winter time patterns.
Look for your redfish, trout and black drum to be holding over the shallow mud flats and sand holes as the snook will be looking for the deeper shorelines and ledges. Live bait and artificials are still working equally as well. We look to have this warming trend into next week and then calling for another article blast. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 Jack Frost has finally arrived to the New Smyrna Beach and Daytona Beach area . It looks as though he’s going to be here for a few days and then the warmer temperatures should be coming back . This cold snap does fire these fish back up and should be chewing well after this front passes . The sight fishing in Mosquito Lagoon will also be good with the cooler temps cleaning the water clarity and sending fish into the sand holes. Live bait and artificials will work equally well it just depends on your choice of weapons.
