As we continue with some beautiful weather again this week the fish still continue to chew well. The weather here in the New Smyrna Beach area has been great with highs in the low 80’s and calm winds.
We still continue to have some winter time low water conditions throughout Mosquito Lagoon and surrounding waters. With the lower water look for the redfish and trout to be holding in the deeper pot holes and sloughs. The black drum have been holding in the shallow flats looking for an easy meal like a shrimp or crab. The snook are starting to thaw out and chew a bit . They have been holding tight on the shorelines and around structure. It looks as though this weather is going to hold steady until the beginning of the week as we are expecting a small front to dip south into Florida. According to the 10 day forecast we may be out of the frozen tundra weather for awhile here in the New Smyrna Beach area. The forecast is calling for highs in the 70’s with some clear skies making for some great fishing on Mosquito Lagoon and the surrounding waters. The water temps are a little cool at the moment but should be back to probably mid 60’s by the weekend if the weather conditions continue.
The snook definitely seem to be in a state of shock which I kinda do not blame them as I myself am still getting over the freezing temps. The redfish and black drum can be found on the shallow sand and mud flats looking for an easy meal . The trout and snook have found shelter in deeper water until the water temps really start to warm. As I said before it looks as though Central Florida will be in a warming trend over the next week and I’m looking forward to some nice weather. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 Looks as though we are getting another blast of artic air moving into the New Smyrna Beach area this week. The frontal weather does affect the fish for a day or so especially in the shallow water of Mosquito Lagoon but the bite gets really strong on the days after the front passes. The redfish, trout, black drum and snook have all been chewing well after this past front as I expect the same routine after this front as well. Down sizing baits and slower retrieves will be the key to trigger bites in these clean and cooler water temperatures. Small soft plastics and live shrimp along with cut bait have been working well. After these cool conditions move out of the Central Florida area expect the bite to only get stronger each day.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 It seems as though Mother Nature just keeps sending us some weather like a gift that just keeps giving. The fishing has been holding strong through all these fronts and if you get out a couple days after the front on the low winds and warm up the bite is even better. With the north and north west winds it has emptied a lot of the water making for some great sight fishing on both black drum and redfish .
The water is a bit cool so the trout and snook seem to have hunkered down in some deeper holes and troughs but still chewing as the sun gets higher. The extended forecast is looking like another front on the horizon with a higher rain chance into the weekend. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The bite has changed a little bit over the last couple of days . We have some pretty cool water temperatures here in the New Smyrna Beach waters especially in the shallow water of Mosquito Lagoon. These cooler temperatures do affect some species and not so much to others like redfish and black drum. The trout and snook definitely do not like the cooler temperatures and seem to be hanging in much deeper water waiting on the water to warm just a bit before becoming active again. The great thing about our waters here in Central FL is that they are extremely shallow for the most part so with a couple of bright sunny warmer days the trout and snook will be right back to chewing like the redfish and black drum are now. It looks as though we are going to have a few days of cooler temperatures and will be back on the rise after this front passes. The water clarity has been great making for some great sight fishing to larger pods of redfish and black drum in shallow water.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 It’s hard to believe that we are now in 2025 , but with being said the 2024 fishing year was very good and I expect the same for this year. This past week has been a continuation of weird weather with warmer conditions, rain , wind and cloudy. It has made it quite difficult to sight fish especially in the open waters of Mosquito Lagoon so we have been focusing on points and bars up in and around New Smyrna Beach area.
The bait choice has been a variety of things from shrimp , cut bait , finger mullet , spoons and soft plastics. The forecast for the up coming week shows a lot of sunshine with a pretty big cool down into next week which should continue to keep these fish firing. Happy New Year to everyone! Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The inconsistent weather continues here in Central Florida with cool temperatures and wind to clouds and rain. But even with some crazy weather lately the bite still continues to be good. We have been boating several species on each trip like trout, redfish and snook just to mention a few. The water clarity is great and when weather allows is making for some great sight fishing from New Smyrna Beach south throughout Mosquito Lagoon. It looks as though we are going to get a little warmer weather heading our way into next week and then another possible cool down afterwards.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 Despite the recent low-pressure system pushing up from the Caribbean bringing windy, wet conditions, the bite has stayed strong in our local waters. The fish don't seem fazed at all – we're consistently landing an impressive variety including speckled trout, redfish, snook, and black drum.
The action's been fantastic with both artificial lures and live bait presentations. Whether you're casting shrimp or finger mullet, the fish are responding. With favorable weather forecasted through Christmas week, we're expecting even better fishing ahead! Look for the redfish, trout and black drum to holding in and around the sand holes and mud bottoms . Smaller baits and slower action has worked well with the crystal clear low water conditions we currently have. Small artificial’s like soft plastics and spoons have been working well along with cut bait and shrimp . It looks as though we have another cold front moving into the New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon area by the the end of the week which will secure them in their winter time pattern.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The recent cold fronts have triggered prime winter fishing conditions across Central Florida waters. Water temperatures have dropped significantly, pushing fish into predictable winter patterns and creating excellent sight-fishing opportunities.
Speckled trout, redfish, and black drum are transitioning from grass flats to sand and mud bottoms in search of warmer water. Snook, particularly sensitive to temperature changes, have moved to deeper holes and channels where they find thermal refuge. This concentration of fish makes for exciting target-rich environments.
