It seems as though we have finally broke our dry spell and are now starting to get our afternoon showers. I do have to say the rain has been much needed. It has been working out pretty good getting on the fish early and back to the dock in time to stay dry. The bite has been really good from New Smyrna Beach south throughout Mosquito Lagoon. The oyster bars up north have been holding a variety of species from trout, snook, jacks and redfish. Throwing spoons and plugs early have worked well and then moving to a shrimp or soft plastic later in the day. The water clarity still seems to be good throughout Mosquito Lagoon considering the rain we have had the last few days. The redfish have been very shallow and have been chewing better early in the morning. Live shrimp or cut bait has worked well throwing to mangrove shorelines. We have also had a influx of bonnet heads and bull sharks further north in the New Smyrna backwaters. Be careful when fighting a fish we have lost a couple this past week to the tax man.

The bite has been good the last few weeks . We have been targeting snook, redfish and trout throughout the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach. We definitely have a good up in coming stock of snook this year. We seem to either boat them just a shy under 28” or over 32”. There has been a lot of keepers caught that I have seen though. The trout bite has been on fire not only in and around New Smyrna Beach but also through out Mosquito Lagoon as well. Look for the pods of bait and the trout will not be far. Top waters early in the morning then moving to soft plastics or live bait as the sun gets higher. You can find the redfish cruising shorelines in the Lagoon as well. Spoons and soft plastics have been working well along with live shrimp presented correctly is almost a guaranteed bite. The traffic on the water has been a little crazy especially on the weekends and with Memorial Day coming up I predict it will busy so be careful and courteous to others.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 Spring is in full swing here in New Smyrna Beach. We have a good amount of bait flowing through the intracoastal and filtering into Mosquito Lagoon. The flats have been alive with trout, redfish , snook and flounder. The artificial bite has not been bad at all while throwing plugs early has been productive then moving to soft plastics and spoons later in the day. The live bait bite has been even better with great results on live finger mullet early then moving to shrimp later in the morning. The backwaters of New Smyrna has been the same results along with some jacks and blue fish as well. Targeting the mangrove shorelines and oyster beds have been producing great numbers.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The warm weather has definitely hit us here in the New Smyrna Beach area. We have been in the mid to upper eighties the past few days and looks like it will continue to increase over the next week. The warmer weather has trigger a really good bite throughout New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon waters. We have been bringing several trout and redfish boat side this past week and I foresee it only getting better. They have been chewing well on both artificial and live bait through the whole day. The early morning plug bite has been good as well. I have had several snook bites around the structure in the New Smyrna Beach area along with a good top water bite throughout the Lagoon as well. The water clarity has been outstanding with great visibility making it easy to spot fish. The weather looks great for the rest of the week so what better way to spend the day but on the water.
