The water has started to clear up in the New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon area after the recent cold front. The winds have also started to calm down as well. The redfish bite has been good along with the trout bite as well. We still have a good population of bait through out Mosquito Lagoon and with the cleaner water hopefully moving in from New Smyrna area the good fishing will only get better.

The cooler weather has started to make an appearance here in the New Smyrna Beach area. The redfish are still stacked up in the inlets and seem to be chewing well. Our trout bite has been good as well through out Mosquito Lagoon along with some schools of black drum showing up down south. We have also had a steady snook bite in the back waters of New Smyrna around structure with moving water. The flounder have also started to move in and are always fun to catch bouncing the bottom with soft plastics or a live shrimp. As the winds continue to shift and water temps begin to cool the clarity will only increase through out Mosquito Lagoon making the sight fishing even better.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 As Fall is upon us here in New Smyrna Beach the bite will start to change a little. The water temps will start to lower especially in Mosquito Lagoon and certain baits will move out. In the upcoming weeks I’m sure we will start to see a shift in wind directions with approaching cold fronts and this will change the tactics you use on Mosquito Lagoon. Fall , Winter and Spring is a awesome time of year to fish the New Smyrna Beach area. The water will clean up greatly and the sight fishing becomes outstanding. Right now we still have a good number of bait pods through out the Lagoon and the water temps are still quite warm. After the passing of the hurricane on our west coast last week I noticed there was a few days of inconsistent wind directions here on the East Coast. I believe those differences in winds for a few days caused a tough bite. But now that everything is back to normal the fish seem to be happy again and chewing well.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The water conditions around New Smyrna Beach and through out Mosquito Lagoon has been pretty dirty due to the high winds the last few days. But on the brighter side of things there is still some cleaner water to found. The redfish and trout have been chewing good when they make themselves presentable. Throwing plugs along shorelines in the early morning is a good way to cover water along with triggering a bite from a cruising red or trout looking for easy prey. Look for the shorelines or grass flats holding bait and target the edges of the bait pods. As the sun starts to rise a little higher I like to switch over to a ADL spoon or soft plastic in a mullet imitation. The bull reds are still holding around the inlets and bridges beneath the large mullet pods and the tarpon are still in and around the lagoon as well. The snook bite has been good as well if to can lure them out of the cover that they have been holding in. With hurricane Michael skirting the west coast of the state the next few days I’m foreseeing a few days of bad weather but should improve rapidly as it passes.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 October is always a fun time to fish in New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon. The weather starts to settle down a bit and the bait shows up in large numbers. This is the time of year when you have many different species of game fish through out Mosquito Lagoon at the same time. From tarpon to snook and from redfish to flounder they can all be caught this time of year. Once we start to get our cold fronts moving through and lowering the water temps certain species will shut down but until that happens take advantage of the bait run moving through the New Smyrna Beach area.
