The bite continues to be strong through out the waters of New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon. We still have great numbers of bait fish scattered near shore and inshore providing a food source for all the game fish. Look for schools of bait holding on and around the shell beds to the north and grass flats to the south.
Targeting the bait schools will produce the bites from red fish and trout to snook and jacks . They have been chewing well in live bait like pin fish and finger mullet but the artificial has also been creating bite as well. It looks as though we have a low pressure moving in later this week into the weekend so that should be really good just before it arrives. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394

The water has started to get back to normal levels after last weeks full moon tides and abundance of rain. The bite continues to be good throughout the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and the flats of Mosquito Lagoon. Look for the pods of bait working across the flats and the game fish will not be far. As you head further north look for the structure as in the shore lines and oyster beds.
There has been a variety of species like redfish, trout, snook and jacks holding on the structure. Spoons , plugs and soft plastics have been working well along with live bait. It looks like we have an approaching storm system coming out of the Gulf that should be here the latter part of this week . So the West Coast will need to hunker down but looks like us on the East Coast are going to get more wind and rain for a couple of days. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The bite has been a little challenging this past week with the full moon phase. Between the influx of rain over the past couple of weeks and the stronger tide swings from the full moon we have had a lot of water throughout the New Smyrna Beach backwaters and Mosquito Lagoon. The fish are still there and ready to eat but just takes a little more effort to locate them as they have new areas to explore with higher water.
Search baits like plugs and spoons have been working well when targeting the large pods of bait that are scattered across the flats. Live bait has also been doing the trick to keep a consistent bite as well. As we get through this full moon phase the water levels should start to get back to normal and the bite will only get better. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 I would have to say that we are no longer in drought conditions here in Central Florida, it has rained every day for the past week. Although with the influx of water in the Mosquito Lagoon it has not affected the bite at all. It has made it a harder to locate them because it has allowed them more areas to wonder but when you find them they will eat.
The key has been focusing on the schools of bait scattered across the oyster bars in the New Smyrna beach area and the shallow grass flats in the Lagoon. Artificials and live bait have both been working well. It looks like the afternoon showers will be here for the rest of the week so the mornings will most likely be best to stay dry. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 I can not believe that it is already the end of August it feels as though this summer is just flying by. The fish are continuing to chew well and the water clarity is still looking good for this time of year. The bait is still flowing into the back waters and on to the shallow flats of Mosquito Lagoon. Look for the tarpon , jacks and snook along the deeper water mixed in with the bait pods as the trout, red fish and black drum will be on the shallow flats. They have all been chewing both artificial and live bait well this past week and I foresee this bite continuing. The weather looks good into next week so it definitely makes for a good time to wet a line.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 It looks like the short time of dryer air has came to a halt as the forecast is calling for afternoon showers for the rest of the week. The fishing in the Mosquito Lagoon and New Smyrna Beach still continues to be good with the redfish , trout , snook and jacks all chewing well. The bait has definitely moved inshore and has been plentiful throughout the flats. Live finger mullet , pinfish and shrimp have been working well along with plugs early then moving to spoons and soft plastics.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 August has been a hot one both weather and bite in the Mosquito Lagoon and New Smyrna Beach. We are starting to get an influx of mullet moving off the beach and inshore which has been setting off some good bites. The fish have been in and around the bait pods. Look for the bait on the shallow flats early then moving to to the deeper water and intracoastal later in the morning.
The redfish, trout, jacks and snook have all been taking advantage of the mullet pods . So live finger mullet have been working well along with shrimp and pin fish. The artificial bite on top water, twitch baits and spoons have been working as well. The weather looks to be good moving into next week so the bite should continue. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 We managed to dodge Hurricane Debby over here on the East Coast of FL but with that being said our thoughts and prayers are with our friends on the West Coast. The bite has been really good this past week but with the influx of wind and rain over the past few days I’m sure the fish are going to ready to chew with stirred up new food sources. Look for the redfish and trout to be hanging on the shallow grass flats mixed in with the bait fish.
The snook and jacks have been working the deeper points and shorelines looking for an easy meal. A variety of live bait has been working well , like finger mullet, pin fish and select shrimp. Any of these in an artificial will work as well. The weather forecast looks to show a calming as this storm continues to move north away from FL so everything should be back to normal by the weeks end. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 Things are really heating up on the water here in the New Smyrna Beach area. We have been targeting several different species throughout the backwaters. The bait continues to be scattered across the shallow flats of Mosquito Lagoon and spreading north into the creeks. Look for the redfish , trout and jacks to be mixed in the schools of bait early to mid morning.
As the water starts to heat up they will start to move off the shallows into a little deeper water like shorelines and ledges. Plugs and spoons have been working good early as live bait has been a more consistent bite. The weather has definitely been hot so early starts has also been working out well . The weather looks good through the up coming weekend but early next week could possibly be a wash out with a possible low pressure heading toward FL . We will just have to see how the forecast pans out. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The temperature’s this past week have been hot to say the least reaching mid 90’s and feeling well over a hundred but with that being said that bite has been fire early morning to mid morning. We have had plenty of bait covering the shallow flats of Mosquito Lagoon along with the back waters of New Smyrna Beach.
Look for the trout , redfish and snook to be shallow early and as the day heats up they will be falling off to the edges in a little deeper water. Live bait and artificials have been both working well in the shallows and deeper shorelines. Throwing plugs early have been producing some great bites on snook, jacks and trout as moving to live bait when the sun gets up has been tricking the redfish and other species. The weather looks to be consistent into next week which means this bite should continue to be good. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 |
