The days have been scalding hot here in the New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon area with highs in the upper 90’s and heat index over 100. With this extreme heat covering most of Central FL and lack of rain this past week it has caused the water temperatures to sky rocket into the 90’s in the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and the shallow flats of Mosquito Lagoon.
With the extreme water temps the fish have been getting pretty lethargic by mid morning make for a much better early bite. The bait is in full force throughout the waters from Daytona Beach south into the Lagoon. The trout and redfish have moved more to the deeper edges in and around the bait pods. The snook and jacks are still hanging around the deeper structure and the tarpon are not to far away as well. The artificial bite has slowed a little with most of the strikes coming early morning and the same with the live bait as well . It looks as though we have some rain moving in later this week which should cool our water temps down a bit and making these fish more active throughout the day. The bite has continued to be strong after the influx of holiday boat traffic that had scattered from Daytona Beach south through New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon for the Forth of July . The bait pods continue to be throughout the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach making for some great trout and redfishing . The snook and jacks have also been active and can be found chasing bait along the shorelines.
The grass flats of Mosquito Lagoon has also been alive with bait and with bait brings predators. The trout and redfish have been hanging in and around the pods of bait throughout the Lagoon. Plugs , spoons and soft plastics have been working and the live bait like pin fish , mullet and shrimp have been even better. It looks as though we are in our summer time weather pattern throughout Central Florida with afternoon showers usually stretching from Daytona Beach south into New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon on a daily basis. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 This past holiday week has been some banner fishing from Daytona Beach south into New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon. It has definitely been some summer conditions with warm days and afternoon showers to cool things off for the evening. The bait has been plentiful both north around the oyster beds in New Smyrna area and south across the shallow grass flats of Mosquito Lagoon.
Look for the redfish and trout to be holding in and around the scattered bait. Plugs , soft plastics and spoons have all been working well for an artificial bite . If live bait is more your style look to pinfish , shrimp or finger mullet for a consistent bite. It looks as though we will be heading into this week with the summer time pattern of afternoon storms which will only increase the bite by cooling the water temps down a bit. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 I definitely believe summer is here in the Central Florida area with the past few days in the mid to upper 90’s . Although it’s been a bit toasty the weather hast been the only thing that’s been hot . We have had a good bite from Daytona Beach south into New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon.
We have been boating some nice trout , redfish and snook along with the occasional large Jack . Targeting the oyster beds and shorelines though out the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach area has been working well ,with live bait and artificials both doing the trick. The grass flats of Mosquito Lagoon have been alive with life like mullet and pinfish , which both have been working well to trigger a bite. It looks as though clear skies are in store into this week with a high pressure sitting over Florida keeping the rain away. The bite should continue into next week as not much looks to be in for change. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The lack of rain and shifting winds from the south has brought a little dirty water into the north end of Mosquito Lagoon and the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach . The fish are still there and seem to be mixed in with the pods of bait that are scattered over the shallow grass flats of the Lagoon and oyster flats to the north. It looks as though this upcoming week is calling for afternoon showers in the New Smyrna Beach area stretching south through Mosquito Lagoon into Titusville.
The change in wind direction with the approaching afternoon storms should move a lot of the dirty water out bringing in cleaner water. They have been chewing both artificials and live bait this past week . Plugs , soft plastics and spoons have all been producing bites along with live finger mullet , shrimp and cut bait . It looks as though we are getting into our summer time pattern with the weatherman calling for afternoon storms the rest of the week into next week. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 Summer's Early Arrival: Bait Migration Triggers Multi-Species Explosion in New Smyrna Waters5/1/2025 I believe summer is definitely upon us here in central Florida as the days get earlier and last longer. The weather has definitely started to warm and with the warmer weather comes warmer water temperatures throughout New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon. The warmer water temps have started to push bait up on the shallow grass flats of Mosquito Lagoon enticing game fish like trout and redfish to follow.
Further north into the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and Daytona Beach the deeper shorelines and oyster bars seem to be alive with several species from snook , black drum , jacks ,trout and redfish to mention a few. Live bait and artificials have been working well both shallow and in the deeper water as well. It looks as the weather will be holding steady for the upcoming week with possible showers mid next week. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The weather conditions continue to be high and dry across Central Florida. With the lack of rain Daytona Beach , New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito lagoon are starting to feel the effects. With some west and south west winds blowing and no rain fall the water levels have been lower than usual from Hew Smyrna south through Mosquito Lagoon.
The bite has started to get better but the last week or so them fish have been making us work for it . Not sure if it’s the lack of rain bringing salinity levels up or warm temps transitioning them into a summer time pattern but they have seemed a little lethargic. Whatever it may have been hopefully they are over it and we can get back to catching some happy fish . I have figured out that plugs and soft plastics have been working well for trout throughout mosquito Lagoon and mullet , shrimp and cut bait have gathered the attention of both snook and redfish further north into New Smyrna . The forecast is still showing no rain in the future until the later part of next week so this pattern should hold through the weekend. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The extended forecast for this up coming week is looking great for the Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach area. It looks as though we are showing low winds along with clear making for some great sight fishing on Mosquito Lagoon. This past week had us dealing with a roller coaster of weather between wind and cloud cover making it difficult to get the fish on any kind of pattern.
We definitely beat the bushes and got it done in some not so favorable conditions, with snook , trout , black drum and redfish all hitting the deck of the boat. I’m looking forward to some typical Central Florida weather and some happy New Smyrna Beach fish to go along with it . The redfish and trout have been hanging with the bait on the shallow grass flats of Mosquito Lagoon. Shrimp , mullet and artificials have all been working well. The snook have started to turn on up north from Daytona Beach south into New Smyrna Beach. Look around the deep water structures like bridges , and docks for those hard hitting line siders. Artificials and live bait has been working well for them as well. The schools of Black Drum can still be found roaming the mud bars and flats on the Lagoon . Live shrimp and crab has been working best for the drum. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The fishing has been good from Daytona Beach south to New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon. The redfish and trout have been up on the shallow flats mixed in with the bait pods. We have also had some large pods of black drum scattered throughout Mosquito Lagoon as well.
Lets not leave the snook out they have been in good numbers in and around structure throughout the waters of Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach. With the recent shrimp run it seems as all the species have been focused on the shrimp but artificial’s have been working well also . It looks as though we are going to have some possible showers first part of next week but after that the weather looks to be great. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 |
