The bite has been good these past weeks and should continue to only get better here in the New Smyrna Beach area. We have been boating a mixed bag of redfish, trout , flounder and snook. They have been eating both artificials and live bait. It seems as though live finger mullet and mud minnows have been the got baits for redfish , trout and flounder where as the snook have been more focused on live shrimp. We still have some large groups throughout Mosquito Lagoon and have been chewing well on both shrimp and blue crab. As the weeks move forward toward the start of Spring I believe the bite will continue to be good.

The bite throughout New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon continues to be good. We have been bringing a mixed bag of species boat side the last couple of weeks. From trout, redfish and snook to flounder, black drum and mangrove snapper. It seems as though the redfish and black drum are feeding better on the shallow flats of Mosquito Lagoon where as the trout and snook prefer the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach. All species have been feeding both on artificial and live bait. It looks as though we will be receiving another cold front this weekend bringing the temps back down into the 40’s at night. But it also looks as though it will be short lived and the 70’s will be right back.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 It looks as though we are on a warming trend at least for the next week or so. The bite continues to be good throughout the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon. We have been targeting redfish, snook, black drum and trout this past week. As the week moves forward the water temps will increase and should only continue to keep producing a good bite. The choice of bait has been Live finger mullet, shrimp and cut bait along with soft plastics and twitch baits . It seems as though the majority of the fish have been holding among the bait pods. If you can find the pods of bait most likely there are some game fish in the mix of them.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The bite continues to be good throughout the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon. The good days have been all about timing. We are on our winter time pattern bringing fronts across Central FL every four to five days or so. The key has been to be on the water a couple days after the fronts move through making for the most stable weather and best bite. We have been boating trout, redfish, snook, black drum and the occasional flounder on both live bait and artificial. Live finger mullet and shrimp have been working well targeting redfish and trout in the pot holes . Soft plastics and twitch baits have been triggering a bite along deeper shorelines for snook and the occasional flounder. Look for the weather to stable toward the end of the week and the bite to continue to increase.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The bite has been really good this past week with cooler and lower water conditions throughout the back waters of New Smyrna Beach. With the abnormal warmer weather moving in this week it will change things up a little bit the forecast is showing the weather getting back to normal by mid week. The warmer conditions puts our fish in mosquito lagoon into a different pattern instead of grouping them up they will actually split up and spread out making for a little harder bite. With the upcoming weather conditions look for the winds to shift and lower the water conditions and bringing the fish back into pods. Look for them to be extremely shallow and ready to eat after the front moves through. Artificials and live bait have been working well when presented slowly.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The fishing here in New Smyrna Beach continues to be good with the recent stable weather. It seems as though we are getting into our winter time pattern of cooler nights and warm days. This allows our fish to get adjusted to some consistent water temps instead a roller coaster of temperatures. The bait still seems to be plentiful throughout New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon. This is the time of year that I’m constantly telling my clients that slower and smaller is better. Small baits presented slowly will get you a bite a lot faster then the average spring and summer time retrieve.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 We have had a whirl wind of weather the past couple of weeks here in the New Smyrna Beach area. It seems as though the recent change in wind direction has push quite a bit of water out. The cooler water temperatures and lower water conditions are making for some steady sight fishing. There has been a good number of redfish and trout holding over the shallow bottom throughout the day along with black drum and some snook holding in the deeper water. Live bait and artificials have been working well when presented slowly. Look for the fishing to continue to get better as the weather starts to stable.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The recent cold fronts that have swept across New Smyrna Beach have really brought the water temps down. Both the air temps and water temperatures are now starting to rise bringing our game fish back to a happier mood. The trout and snook disappeared for a few days due to water temperatures moving into deeper water but have now started to show back up. The redfish and black drum can still be found holding on the flats in the pot holes and on the mud flats. Small baits have been the trick to get the bites. Shrimp , cut bait or small artificials worked slowly have done well. It looks like we have some warmer days ahead so hopefully it warms the water a tad bit more.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 With the recent back to back cold fronts hitting the New Smyrna Beach area has brought some much needed cooler water temperatures. The cooler water conditions have started to clean up the water clarity throughout the Mosquito Lagoon and New Smyrna backwaters. The shift in winds has helped to lower the water levels pushing the fish into little groups and pods. Long cast and patience’s are a must with the cleaner low water as the fish are a little on edge. Slow retrieves on small artificial’s will work along with live shrimp and cut bait. This is the time of year when slower is better due to cooler water temps. It looks like the air temps will be increasing over the next few days until another predicted front to hit our area later in the week. Happy Holidays to everyone!
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The bite continues to be good here in the New Smyrna Beach area. With the recent weather change it has helped with eliminating the excess water we have had and looks to be cleaning it up a little as well.
We have been boating redfish, snook, trout and flounder throughout the backwaters and into Mosquito Lagoon. The water clarity is still not that great in the Lagoon but seems to be getting better with each day. The water temps have been cooling down quite a bit so slow retrieves on artificials and smaller live baits have been working well. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 |
