This past week has been hotter then Africa in the middle of summer . The bite has been good from New Smyrna Beach south through Mosquito Lagoon. The bait has been moving in extremely thick along the intracoastal and up onto the flats. With all the bait moving in thick has made for a good bite from a variety of species. With the water temps rising the tarpon have been really active throughout the deeper water along with the jacks mixed in. The trout and redfish have been mixed in with the bait pods on the flats and the backwater bays. The early morning plug bite has been good in and around the New Smyrna area the moving to spoons and soft plastics as the sun gets higher. Live bait has been working as well from live shrimp to live finger mullet.

The summer heat has definitely started to arrive making for some pretty warm days this past week. The warmer weather has not effected the bite here in the New Smyrna Beach area with clients bringing several redfish, trout and snook boat side last week. The bait continues to be plentiful in the backwaters south to Mosquito Lagoon . The water is starting to warm up quite a bit making the bite a little better early morning and early evening. Plugs have been working well early along with soft plastics and spoons also live shrimp and mullet as well. Looks like the Sumer pattern is here to stay for a while so watch out for the late afternoon thunder storms that are common this time of year.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 It seems as though summer has set in here and around the New Smyrna Beach area. We are starting to get our afternoon thunder storms and strong afternoon winds. This time of year is a great time to catch several different species from snook, redfish, trout, black drum and tarpon. The bite has been good throughout Mosquito Lagoon and north through New Smyrna Beach. Look for snook and tarpon in the backwaters holding near structure with moving water. The trout and redfish can be found mixed in with the large pods of bait in the Lagoon. Early in the morning has been producing well with plugs then moving over to soft plastics or live bait. It looks like we may have some weather coming in later in the week making for a good bite prior to the arrival of the weather.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 I believe summer has arrived in full effect here in the New Smyrna Beach area. The temperature is hot and the fishing is as well. We have had a good amount of bait move in throughout Mosquito Lagoon and north into the backwaters of New Smyrna. The trout and redfish can be found mixed in with the bait pods. Shrimp and live finger mullet have been working well along with spoons , soft plastics and plugs.
The snook are still chewing well . They have been hanging around all kinds of structure from New Smyrna beach south through Oakhill. Shrimp and plugs have been working best to trick the snook. The water temps have also warmed up and our tarpon are really starting to get happy making regular appearances throughout the backwaters. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 This past week has been a little on the windy side to say the least. It has definitely made it a little challenging in the open waters of Mosquito Lagoon. We have fought through it and over came the hurdle to boat fish. Look for redfish , snook and trout holding on the windward points throughout the New Smyrna Beach waters. Beating the bushes with both artificials and live bait has been the trick. Live finger mullet , shrimp and soft plastics seem to work the best. Hopefully the weather will be calming for the upcoming week and bringing everything back to normal.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 It seems as though the winds have hopefully started to lay down. The bite has continued to be good throughout the New Smyrna Beach area. We have been boating several species on the daily from redfish and black drum to trout and snook. I have started to see quite a bit of mullet moving through the area and should continue as the months move forward. The redfish and trout have been holding in the shallows mixed in with the bait. Live shrimp, finger mullet and artificials have all been working well. The snook and black drum have been holding in the deeper water focusing on the shrimp that have been running this past week. The bite should continue to only get better as we move into the month of May and the weather should continue to stable as well .
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 This has definitely been the windiest March and April that I can remember for a long time. With the wind though has brought some good fishing throughout the New Smyrna Beach area. We have been bringing several different species boat side along with several slams as well. With weather permitting the redfish have been working the shallow flats of Mosquito Lagoon pushing small baits and shrimp out of the mud. The trout bite has started to come around as we have had a influx of mullet schools across the flats. The snook bite has been good as well , as they have been hanging on shorelines with structure and bait. A variety of soft plastics and plugs have been working well along with live finger mullet and shrimp. I’m hoping the weather will be settling down over the next week or so to allow for some easier conditions.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The weather has finally warmed back up to our Central Florida standards and the bite has warmed up as well. The snook, redfish , black drum and trout bite has been good early in the morning. The bait pods have been flooding on to the flats early bringing the redfish and trout with them. Soft plastics ,spoons , live shrimp and cut bait have been working well. The snook and black drum have been holding on structure in and around the New Smyrna Beach area. Plugs , soft plastics and live shrimp have been working well. The weather looks stable going into next week making for the bite to continue to get better.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The bite continues to be good throughout the New Smyrna Beach waters south into Mosquito Lagoon. We have been bringing several species boat side like redfish, trout, snook and black drum. As Spring starts to transform into summer the bite will only continue to be good. Look for the redfish and trout in the shallows early mixed in with the schools of bait. The snook and black drum have been holding along the deeper shorelines and structure. Shrimp and artificials have both been working well and as the shrimp continue to run I believe the bite will continue as well. Looks like our weather pattern has started to become steady and do not believe we will have anymore cold fronts in our future.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The weather here in New Smyrna Beach has been outstanding this past week and looks like it will continue into the near future. We have had clear skies with highs in the 80’s just like a Florida post card. The bite continues to be good with several different species coming boat side this past week along with four days straight with a slam. The sight fishing has been good with scattered redfish, trout and black drum throughout Mosquito Lagoon. Further north into the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach it’s been more of deep water structure fishing. Both live bait and artificials have been working well so it’s really coming down to preference on which to use.
