Mosquito lagoon,New smyrna Beach and Daytona Beach Fishing Report. It's hard believe that fall is upon us and summer is coming to a end. But this also means that there is some cooler weather ahead and even better fishing around the corner. With the recent rain fall we have had along the east coast the water level in Mosquito lagoon and New Smyrna Bch area is higher than usual. It has also dirtied up to make it a little difficult for sight fishing so targeting the bait schools has been key. With the large schools of mullet holding on the flats and in the creeks look for game fish to be mixed in and around them like trout, redfish, jacks , tarpon and flounder. This is a great time to throw plugs, soft plastics and my personal favorite Aqua Dream spoons on the edge of the large bait pods. From early morning to mid mid day look for the redfish to be tailing on the shallow grass flats in the Mosquito lagoon and also on top of the oyster bars through out the New Smyrna Beach area. The trout will not be far from the bait pods and can be seen popping mullet from the surface time to time.I like to throw a topwater plug early and then move to a twitch bait later in the day as they move to the deeper edges of the flats. For the shallow tailing fish I like to use a soft plastic rigged weedless there are many to choose from but a little shad pattern or shrimp pattern has been working well. The only bad thing is the pinfish and puffer fish will wreak havoc on your tackle supply. We also still have good numbers of tarpon holding around the bridges of Daytona and New Smyrna Beach along with through out the Lagoon system. they can be tricked on several different baits from finger mullet, pin fish, and many different artificials. We also have large schools of over slot breeder redfish through out the Mosquito Lagoon and Indian River Lagoon this time of year. Good luck and be safe! Capt Patrick Rood 386-566-1394 www.spotntailcharters.com
