New Smyrna Beach,Daytona Beach and Mosquito Lagoon  fishing report 
 September 2014 

 
It's hard believe that fall is upon us already and summer is coming to a end. But on a brighter note 
this brings the fall mullet run which Ads up to some great fishing on the east coast. The mullet are starting to show up 
in large quantities in certain areas with in the Mosquito Lagoon ,Edgewater,New Smyrna Beach and Daytona beach area. 
With the large schools of bait holding on the flats and in the creeks look for game fish to be mixed in and around 
them like trout,redfish,jacks , tarpon and flounder. This is a great time to throw plugs and spoons on the edge 
of the large bait pods to get that reaction bite on a look alike wounded bait fish in the early morning. As the sun 
gets a little higher in the sky look for the redfish to be tailing on the shallow grass flats in the Mosquito lagoon 
and also on the edge of the oyster bars through out the New Smyrna Beach area. The trout will not be far from the 
bait pods holding on the edges and also in the grass. I mentioned plugs and spoons earlier in the report a good 
choice are the mirrow lure twitch baits and top waters along with the Aqua Dream spoons work great under these 
conditions. For the shallow tailing fish I like to use a soft plastic rigged weedless there are many to choose from but 
a little shad pattern or shrimp pattern has been working well. We also still have good numbers of tarpon holding 
around the bridges of Daytona and New Smyrna Beach along with through out the Lagoon system. If conditions allow
there are still great numbers of Tarpon along with sharks and bonita along the beaches and inlets up and down the east coast.
The great thing about this time of year is the different types of live bait that is available from pin fish,mullet,pig fish and shrimp
just to mention a few. They will eat all of them and more it just depends on what choice of poison you would like to provide at 
the dinner table..We also have large schools of over slot breeder redfish through out the Mosquito Lagoon and Indian River Lagoon this time of year
along with the inlets and passes up and down the east coast.  When targeting these fish 
please handle with care and take the time to revive them so they can fight another day as they are the main reproducers.
