The bite throughout the Daytona Beach , New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon waters continues to be good . We are still see a good number of bait pods both north in the New Smyrna Beach area along with the shallow grass flats of Mosquito Lagoon. The bait of choice has been a variety of baits from artificial like soft plastics , spoons and plugs to live shrimp, pinfish and finger mullet. We have had a break from the afternoon storms this week but looks like we could be getting some scattered showers toward the end of the week.

Fishing Charters in Daytona Beach, New Smyrna Beach, and Mosquito LagoonAs we are starting to move into Fall here in the Central Florida area the the mornings are a little cooler and the bait has definitely started to show up . We have had an influx of mullet schools from Daytona Beach into the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and throughout Mosquito Lagoon. The water has started to cool a bit and the fish are on the hunt.
Look for snook and tarpon holding around the structure and bait pods though out the Intracoastal in the New Smyrna Beach waters. Live bait and artificials have both been working well . We continue to have a good bite on redfish and trout across the Mosquito Lagoon. Targeting the schools of bait that have been located up on the shallow grass flats has been the key. Plugs and soft plastics have been working along with live finger mullet and pinfish for live bait. The weather finally looks like it is starting to dry out a little bit with this a little rain in the forecast for the next week. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 New Smyrna Beach Fishing ChartersWe still have not received a break from the rain here in the New Smyrna Beach area. The water level has risen quite a bit between the recent full moon and afternoon storms giving the fish new feeding opportunities.
The fish are still there to be caught they have just moved up a little with the water level looking for a new food source. The bait is still in full swing both in the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and also into Mosquito Lagoon. Finding the bait has been the key as the bait has followed the water up on to shallow bars and flats the fish have followed the bait. Plugs and spoons have been working well as great search baits along with mullet and pinfish as well. The weather looks to continue into the weekend with showers daily and then slowing down into next week. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 Finding Fish After the Storm: Current Bait Patterns in Mosquito Lagoon and New Smyrna Beach9/4/2025 The recent weather patterns across Central Florida have brought challenging conditions to New Smyrna Beach fishing charters and Mosquito Lagoon guided trips. Strong easterly winds and heavy rainfall have impacted Daytona Beach fishing conditions this past week. The persistent easterly push from the Atlantic Ocean has driven additional water into Mosquito Lagoon, creating higher than normal water levels that have temporarily displaced fish from their typical holding areas.
However, experienced New Smyrna Beach fishing guides know that as this weather system moves out, Central Florida fishing conditions will return to normal fall patterns. Inshore fishing enthusiasts booking Mosquito Lagoon charters should note that fish are still actively feeding but have spread out due to elevated water conditions. The key to successful shallow water fishing remains locating baitfish concentrations. Prime fishing locations currently producing results include the grass flats throughout Mosquito Lagoon, oyster bars and structure in New Smyrna Beach waters, and shallow water areas where baitfish are holding. The fundamental rule for successful inshore fishing charters continues to hold true: find the bait, find the fish. Current bait concentrations are positioned around Mosquito Lagoon grass flats offering excellent sight fishing opportunities, oyster bars and shallow structure throughout the New Smyrna Beach area, and protected shorelines where baitfish seek refuge from recent weather. Weather conditions are expected to stabilize toward week's end, creating ideal opportunities for guided fishing trips and private fishing charters. Reduced wind and minimal precipitation will allow for better shallow water fishing conditions, improved sight fishing visibility, and fish returning to predictable fall fishing patterns. Captain Patrick Rood Spot N Tail Charters www.spotntailcharters.com (386) 566-1394 Things are starting to change dramatically here in the Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach waters, and it's creating some of the most exciting fishing we've seen all season. We are starting to see a significant influx of bait moving in and along the beach, which is a clear sign that Fall is approaching fast. While Fall's arrival doesn't drastically change our weather here in Central Florida, it dramatically increases the baitfish populations, throwing predatory fish into an absolute feeding frenzy.
The action has been nothing short of spectacular as we're witnessing snook, tarpon, redfish, trout, jacks, bluefish, and several other species aggressively chasing these massive bait pods for easy meals from Daytona Beach south through the pristine waters of Mosquito Lagoon. When these gamefish get locked onto the bait schools, they become incredibly focused and aggressive, creating perfect conditions for exciting sight fishing opportunities with both live baits and artificial lures. The weather pattern for the upcoming week looks to be holding steady with highs in the low 90s and the possibility of afternoon showers. These brief afternoon storms actually help by cooling the water temperature and often trigger another feeding burst in the late afternoon and early evening hours. This transitional period is one of the most productive times of the year, so now is the perfect time to get on the water and experience this incredible action firsthand. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386) 566-1394 This week has been a little different here in the New Smyrna Beach and Daytona Beach area with the first named Hurricane of the year off the coast . As Erin scooted up to the north it really never affected us weather wise but did bring in some high surf and influx of water.
With the higher water throughout NewSmyrna Beach and into Mosquito Lagoon it has spread the pods of bait out along with the fish. Instead of fishing the grass edges and bar edges look for the fish to be on top of the grass and bars. As the storm continues to move north the water levels should be back to normal by the end of the week and condensing the fish and bait back together . The extended forecast into next week is looking good and the fishing should be just as good. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 Between the afternoon storms that have stretched from Daytona Beach south through New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon and the recent full moon the water levels have been extremely high.
With the higher water levels it has allowed the fish to spread out along shorelines and on to flats that they have not recently been able to access. The bait can still be found both in the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and throughout Mosquito Lagoon. Finding the bait has been the key to finding the fish. Look for the pods of bait in the shallows early then breaking up and moving to the edges as the sun gets up . The fish ave been mixed in with them and following the same pattern . Live bait has been working well along with spoons and soft plastics. It looks as though the afternoon rain will be sticking around til the weekend. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 With the recent afternoon showers covering the Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach coastlines the influx of rain water has cooled the water temperatures down to normal. We have been seeing 91 degree water temps into the shallows of Mosquito Lagoon this past week making for some very lethargic fish . Now the water temps have cooled the fish are way more aggressive with great numbers coming boat side this week.
The schools of bait have been plenty full throughout the backwaters and across the flats of Mosquito Lagoon. The fish have been mixed in with the bait in the early mornings and then moving to the deeper edges as the sun gets higher. Live bait has been working well along with soft plastics and spoons for the late morning bites.it looks as though our afternoon showers will be continuing through the weekend which will only make the bite better. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The days have been scalding hot here in the New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon area with highs in the upper 90’s and heat index over 100. With this extreme heat covering most of Central FL and lack of rain this past week it has caused the water temperatures to sky rocket into the 90’s in the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and the shallow flats of Mosquito Lagoon.
With the extreme water temps the fish have been getting pretty lethargic by mid morning make for a much better early bite. The bait is in full force throughout the waters from Daytona Beach south into the Lagoon. The trout and redfish have moved more to the deeper edges in and around the bait pods. The snook and jacks are still hanging around the deeper structure and the tarpon are not to far away as well. The artificial bite has slowed a little with most of the strikes coming early morning and the same with the live bait as well . It looks as though we have some rain moving in later this week which should cool our water temps down a bit and making these fish more active throughout the day. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 As we move into the end of July the summer bite has really ramped up throughout the waters of New Smyrna Beach and Daytona Beach. We have been boating several different species like redfish, snook, jacks and trout. The bait pods have been spread out across the flats of Mosquito Lagoon and have worked their way through the oyster bays of New Smyrna Beach as well.
Focusing on the bait has been the key to locating the game fish. Look for the bait up shallow early then as the sun starts to rise the bait and fish will move to the deeper ledges. Pinfish , mullet and cut bait have all been working well along with spoons and soft plastics. It looks as though we may have some precipitation later in the but should not effect the bite.
