The weather conditions continue to be high and dry across Central Florida. With the lack of rain Daytona Beach , New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito lagoon are starting to feel the effects. With some west and south west winds blowing and no rain fall the water levels have been lower than usual from Hew Smyrna south through Mosquito Lagoon.
The bite has started to get better but the last week or so them fish have been making us work for it . Not sure if it’s the lack of rain bringing salinity levels up or warm temps transitioning them into a summer time pattern but they have seemed a little lethargic. Whatever it may have been hopefully they are over it and we can get back to catching some happy fish . I have figured out that plugs and soft plastics have been working well for trout throughout mosquito Lagoon and mullet , shrimp and cut bait have gathered the attention of both snook and redfish further north into New Smyrna . The forecast is still showing no rain in the future until the later part of next week so this pattern should hold through the weekend. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394

The extended forecast for this up coming week is looking great for the Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach area. It looks as though we are showing low winds along with clear making for some great sight fishing on Mosquito Lagoon. This past week had us dealing with a roller coaster of weather between wind and cloud cover making it difficult to get the fish on any kind of pattern.
We definitely beat the bushes and got it done in some not so favorable conditions, with snook , trout , black drum and redfish all hitting the deck of the boat. I’m looking forward to some typical Central Florida weather and some happy New Smyrna Beach fish to go along with it . The redfish and trout have been hanging with the bait on the shallow grass flats of Mosquito Lagoon. Shrimp , mullet and artificials have all been working well. The snook have started to turn on up north from Daytona Beach south into New Smyrna Beach. Look around the deep water structures like bridges , and docks for those hard hitting line siders. Artificials and live bait has been working well for them as well. The schools of Black Drum can still be found roaming the mud bars and flats on the Lagoon . Live shrimp and crab has been working best for the drum. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 Adapting to Nature's Challenge: The Latest Fishing Report for New Smyrna Beach & Mosquito Lagoon4/9/2025 It seems as though someone has forgot to turn off the fan here in the New Smyrna Beach area with gusty winds the last five days . The winds have definitely not made it easy especially trying to sight fish in the Mosquito Lagoon but we have ground through it and caught fish. Looking at the forecast it looks as though we are going to continue with some wind over the next few days.
We have been focusing on points and bars located on the wind ward side. Soft plastics and live bait have been working well. A little further north into the Daytona Beach area the structure has been the key, live shrimp and pinfish tossed around the docks and bridges have been producing some good bites. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The fishing continues to be hot across the waters of New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon . The weather has been cooperating for the most part this past week making for some great sight fishing in the shallows.
We also continue to have a good bite further north into Daytona Beach area with a lot of fish holding in and around the structures of docks and bridges. Looking at the long forecast into next week it looks as though winter is not quite through with us here in Central FL as a late season cool front will dip down for a couple of days. The temperatures should not affect the fish as the temps should only hang around a day or so. The bait is starting to show back up around the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and on the flats of Mosquito Lagoon. We have been boating a variety of species like redfish, trout , black drum and snook. They have been chewing well on shrimp and mullet but spoons and soft plastics can entice a bite as well. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The fishing has been good from Daytona Beach south to New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon. The redfish and trout have been up on the shallow flats mixed in with the bait pods. We have also had some large pods of black drum scattered throughout Mosquito Lagoon as well.
Lets not leave the snook out they have been in good numbers in and around structure throughout the waters of Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach. With the recent shrimp run it seems as all the species have been focused on the shrimp but artificial’s have been working well also . It looks as though we are going to have some possible showers first part of next week but after that the weather looks to be great. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 Spring is definitely upon us here in New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon . The bite has been turning up and the flats have been alive. We have had clean and clear water conditions from Daytona Beach south through Mosquito Lagoon making for some great sight fishing . The weather looks to be stable moving into the weekend which should only reassure the bite.
Shrimp , mullet and cut bait have been working well along with spoons and soft plastics. Look for the bait holding on the flats and the fish can be found mixed throughout them whether it’s redfish , trout or even black drum all have been found scattered through the bait. As the water temps warm into the week the bite will only continue to get better. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 New Smyrna Beach & Mosquito Lagoon Fishing Report: Spring Patterns Emerging Despite Windy Conditions3/5/2025 The past weekend brought challenging but rewarding fishing conditions to the New Smyrna Beach and Daytona Beach area, with persistent winds creating some difficulties for anglers. Despite these challenges, the exceptional water clarity throughout the Mosquito Lagoon system continues to provide outstanding sight fishing opportunities on days with clear skies and manageable winds.
Redfish continue to be the primary target in the shallow backcountry waters, with many fish now transitioning to their spring patterns. We're finding good numbers of reds both tailing in shallow grass flats during higher tides and cruising the deeper edges when water levels drop. The crystal-clear conditions have allowed us to spot fish from considerable distances, giving anglers ample time to position for perfect presentations. Bait selection has been versatile and productive across multiple options. Live shrimp remains the consistent producer, especially when rigged under a popping cork along grass edges or free-lined into visible schools. Mullet and cut bait have been particularly effective during windier periods when more scent in the water helps fish locate your offering. For artificial enthusiasts, soft plastic paddletails in natural colors (particularly browns, whites, and gold glitter patterns) and weedless spoons worked slowly along bottom contours have triggered aggressive strikes. Spotted seatrout are becoming more active as water temperatures gradually increase, with several quality fish in the 18-22 inch range coming from slightly deeper potholes adjacent to shallow flats. These trout have been most receptive to suspended baits worked with a subtle twitch-pause retrieve early in the morning. Weather patterns remain somewhat unpredictable as we transition between seasons. Another small cold front is expected to move through our region in the coming days, temporarily dropping air temperatures but likely having minimal impact on overall fishing quality. This brief cooling period might actually concentrate fish and improve feeding activity once it passes. Based on current conditions and forecasts, I anticipate the bite will strengthen considerably heading into next week as more stable spring patterns establish themselves. For anglers planning trips to the New Smyrna Beach area or looking to explore the legendary Mosquito Lagoon, the coming weeks offer prime opportunities for quality catches across multiple species. Early morning and late afternoon sessions continue to produce the most consistent action, especially for sight fishing enthusiasts. With extensive local knowledge and years of guiding experience, Captain Patrick specializes in putting clients on the fish of a lifetime in the pristine waters of New Smyrna Beach, Daytona Beach, and the famous Mosquito Lagoon. As we approach March it seems as though the weather is starting to figure out that we are coming up on Spring . The extended forecast for the up coming week looks good to be put on the water. The fish have been chewing well , even after this little front that has just passed. The backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and Daytona Beach have been holding great numbers of redfish , trout and snook .
The water clarity throughout Mosquito Lagoon has been at a ten making for some great sight fishing over the shallow grass flats. They have been receptive to several different baits like shrimp , mullet , cut bait along with artificials. Spring is approaching and if it stays on track it should be a good one! Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 So just when we thought that Spring had arrived here in Central Florida ole Winter had to make another appearance. We had a small front dip down over the weekend bringing wind , rain and cooler temperatures across Daytona Beach , New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon. It kinda throw the fish for a little loop as they were starting to get settled into a spring time pattern . But after figuring out that temperature and wind direction are changing they have got right back into the groove of things.
Look for the red fish and trout throughout the sand holes and deeper sloughs of mosquito Lagoon and back waters of New Smyrna. The snook have been hanging in the deeper water in and around structure. We also have a large number of black drum working the shallows on the mud and sand bottom. The baits of choice have been shrimp , mullet and cut bait along with soft plastics and spoons. It looks as though we have another cold front moving in mid week so I believe this pattern will stay in place for a while. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 |
