June 2014 Fishing Report : For New Smyrna Bch, Daytona Bch and Mosquito Lagoon
Summer has arrived with highs in the mid 90's already and the water temp of around 76. This has not affected the bite at all with many days of double digit trout and red fish coming boat side. I have been targeting the trout early throwing plugs around the bait pods along with live pig fish. This has been working well but as the morning goes on and the bait seems to disappear so does the trout bite. The red fish have been chewing all day. Starting on the shallow grass early then moving to the deeper flats
with bait as the day moves on. I have been catching them on soft plastics, Aqua Dream Spoons and several different live bait options, from live mullet to cut bait. They have been chewing them all. The silver king aka Tarpon, can be very skittish at times so I like to target them early in the morning or late evening with less traffic on the water. They will eat alot of different baits from diving plugs to live bait but make sure you are prepared with the right equipment there is some hundred plus pounders that could ruin your day.
I like to use a 5000 series reel paired up with a Seeker rod and around thirty to forty pound test braid.
Good luck and be safe!
