The bait has really started to move into the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon. With the influx of bait it’s made for some great fishing these past weeks and should continue to stay good. The bite has been early in the mornings and late evenings when the water temperatures are cooler. Look for trout and redfish cruising the flats and shorelines among the bait pods. Plugs , soft plastics and spoons have been working well for artificials. Finger mullet, pigfish , pin fish and cut bait have been some go to live bait choices. The snook, tarpon and jacks have been throughout the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and will continue to hold around and in the deeper sloughs and structured shorelines.

The bait has finally started to show up here in the New Smyrna Beach area making for some good bites. The water temps are starting to rise just like the air temps making for a better early morning and late evening bite. Look for the redfish and trout cruising the shallows early then moving to the drop offs as the sun gets higher. The snook and tarpon have been making some appearances early as well, then slowing down when the sun gets higher in the sky. It looks like the summer time fish patterns are in full affect . Not only are the fish patterns in full swing but the summer time weather patterns are as well with afternoon thunderstorms everyday.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 This late cold front that past last week has brought us some cooler weather and a whole bunch of wind. The wind has not effected the bite though. We have been on a steady trout and redfish bite here in New Smyrna Beach. Once this high pressure lifts later in the week the bite will only continue to get better. Look for the redfish and trout to be holding in and around the bait throughout Mosquito Lagoon and the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach. The jacks and snook have also been chewing well in and around the backwaters of the Lagoon. Plugs , spoons and soft plastics have all been working well. Focus on the structure along shorelines holding bait.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 I believe summer has finally started to pop it’s head out here in New Smyrna Beach. The weather has started to warm and t to e bite has continued to get better. Look for the bait to continue to show up on the flats of Mosquito Lagoon . Look for the trout and redfish to mingle among the schools of bait throughout the shallows. Spoons, plugs and soft plastics have been working along with live mullet and shrimp. As the water temps continue to fuse and more bait arrive the bite will continue to only get better.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 Finally, after this last little blast of cool weather it seems as though the waters around New Smyrna Beach are getting to normal. The bite has been good with several different species coming boat side this past week. As the waters continue to warm the fish will start to get into their spring time patterns and the bait should start to show up in greater numbers.
Look for the redfish and trout cruising shorelines throughout Mosquito Lagoon. Artificials and live bait have both been working well. The trout still need a little patience’s with the slowly warming water temps. The snook and Jack bite has been good a little further north into New Smyrna Beach. Live shrimp and soft plastics have been getting bites around the structure holding fish. Looks as though the weather conditions will be leveling off and continuing to warm. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 This past week was like a little taste of Spring here in New Smyrna Beach. We had clear skies and highs in the 80’s along with some very crowded boat ramps . The bite has been good with several redfish and snook coming boat side this past week. The weather looks like it could be taking a dip over the next couple days into the 60’s which should only help the fish throughput Mosquito Lagoon. Live bait has been the go to baits this week from finger mullet to shrimp and the occasional blue crabs. If artificials are more your style then plugs , spoons and small soft plastics have been working well.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 It looks as though we are on a warming trend at least for the next week or so. The bite continues to be good throughout the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon. We have been targeting redfish, snook, black drum and trout this past week. As the week moves forward the water temps will increase and should only continue to keep producing a good bite. The choice of bait has been Live finger mullet, shrimp and cut bait along with soft plastics and twitch baits . It seems as though the majority of the fish have been holding among the bait pods. If you can find the pods of bait most likely there are some game fish in the mix of them.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The fishing has been good this past week in the New Smyrna Beach area with many snook and redfish coming boat side. The fishing has also been good throughout Mosquito Lagoon as well with a great trout and redfish bite. Unfortunately we have a category 4 Hurricane approaching us here in New Smyrna Beach which will bring a strong tidal surge. Mosquito Lagoon will also see a massive influx of water as well but should reside with in a few days and hopefully take some of the dirty water with it. Everyone in the path of Dorian good luck and be safe.
