Things are starting to change dramatically here in the Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach waters, and it's creating some of the most exciting fishing we've seen all season. We are starting to see a significant influx of bait moving in and along the beach, which is a clear sign that Fall is approaching fast. While Fall's arrival doesn't drastically change our weather here in Central Florida, it dramatically increases the baitfish populations, throwing predatory fish into an absolute feeding frenzy.
The action has been nothing short of spectacular as we're witnessing snook, tarpon, redfish, trout, jacks, bluefish, and several other species aggressively chasing these massive bait pods for easy meals from Daytona Beach south through the pristine waters of Mosquito Lagoon. When these gamefish get locked onto the bait schools, they become incredibly focused and aggressive, creating perfect conditions for exciting sight fishing opportunities with both live baits and artificial lures. The weather pattern for the upcoming week looks to be holding steady with highs in the low 90s and the possibility of afternoon showers. These brief afternoon storms actually help by cooling the water temperature and often trigger another feeding burst in the late afternoon and early evening hours. This transitional period is one of the most productive times of the year, so now is the perfect time to get on the water and experience this incredible action firsthand. This week has been a little different here in the New Smyrna Beach and Daytona Beach area with the first named Hurricane of the year off the coast . As Erin scooted up to the north it really never affected us weather wise but did bring in some high surf and influx of water.
With the higher water throughout NewSmyrna Beach and into Mosquito Lagoon it has spread the pods of bait out along with the fish. Instead of fishing the grass edges and bar edges look for the fish to be on top of the grass and bars. As the storm continues to move north the water levels should be back to normal by the end of the week and condensing the fish and bait back together . The extended forecast into next week is looking good and the fishing should be just as good. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 Between the afternoon storms that have stretched from Daytona Beach south through New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon and the recent full moon the water levels have been extremely high.
With the higher water levels it has allowed the fish to spread out along shorelines and on to flats that they have not recently been able to access. The bait can still be found both in the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and throughout Mosquito Lagoon. Finding the bait has been the key to finding the fish. Look for the pods of bait in the shallows early then breaking up and moving to the edges as the sun gets up . The fish ave been mixed in with them and following the same pattern . Live bait has been working well along with spoons and soft plastics. It looks as though the afternoon rain will be sticking around til the weekend. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 With the recent afternoon showers covering the Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach coastlines the influx of rain water has cooled the water temperatures down to normal. We have been seeing 91 degree water temps into the shallows of Mosquito Lagoon this past week making for some very lethargic fish . Now the water temps have cooled the fish are way more aggressive with great numbers coming boat side this week.
The schools of bait have been plenty full throughout the backwaters and across the flats of Mosquito Lagoon. The fish have been mixed in with the bait in the early mornings and then moving to the deeper edges as the sun gets higher. Live bait has been working well along with soft plastics and spoons for the late morning bites.it looks as though our afternoon showers will be continuing through the weekend which will only make the bite better.
