The days have been scalding hot here in the New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon area with highs in the upper 90’s and heat index over 100. With this extreme heat covering most of Central FL and lack of rain this past week it has caused the water temperatures to sky rocket into the 90’s in the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and the shallow flats of Mosquito Lagoon.
With the extreme water temps the fish have been getting pretty lethargic by mid morning make for a much better early bite. The bait is in full force throughout the waters from Daytona Beach south into the Lagoon. The trout and redfish have moved more to the deeper edges in and around the bait pods. The snook and jacks are still hanging around the deeper structure and the tarpon are not to far away as well. The artificial bite has slowed a little with most of the strikes coming early morning and the same with the live bait as well . It looks as though we have some rain moving in later this week which should cool our water temps down a bit and making these fish more active throughout the day. As we move into the end of July the summer bite has really ramped up throughout the waters of New Smyrna Beach and Daytona Beach. We have been boating several different species like redfish, snook, jacks and trout. The bait pods have been spread out across the flats of Mosquito Lagoon and have worked their way through the oyster bays of New Smyrna Beach as well.
Focusing on the bait has been the key to locating the game fish. Look for the bait up shallow early then as the sun starts to rise the bait and fish will move to the deeper ledges. Pinfish , mullet and cut bait have all been working well along with spoons and soft plastics. It looks as though we may have some precipitation later in the but should not effect the bite. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The bite has been good this past week throughout the Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach area all the way south through Mosquito Lagoon. With the recent afternoon thunderstorms dropping some rain has actually cooled the water temps down a bit bringing these fish back to being more active. The backwater bite throughout New Smyrna Beach has been consistent with quality trout , redfish , snook and some nice jacks .
As you head south into Mosquito Lagoon the bite has continued with trout mixed in with all the bait and the redfish have been very shallow milling around in the grass. Live bait has been working well and some artificial’s as well . It looks as though low pressure is trying to form off our coast which could bring a substantial amount of rain across the state which could effect the bite into the weekend. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The bite has continued to be strong after the influx of holiday boat traffic that had scattered from Daytona Beach south through New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon for the Forth of July . The bait pods continue to be throughout the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach making for some great trout and redfishing . The snook and jacks have also been active and can be found chasing bait along the shorelines.
The grass flats of Mosquito Lagoon has also been alive with bait and with bait brings predators. The trout and redfish have been hanging in and around the pods of bait throughout the Lagoon. Plugs , spoons and soft plastics have been working and the live bait like pin fish , mullet and shrimp have been even better. It looks as though we are in our summer time weather pattern throughout Central Florida with afternoon showers usually stretching from Daytona Beach south into New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon on a daily basis. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The New Smyrna Beach and mosquito Lagoon area has been in much need of some rain and it seems that it has arrived. With the recent rains it has really triggered a solid trout bite this past week with double digit days . The red fish and snook are still plentiful both in the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and also in the shallows of Mosquito Lagoon.
Both live bait and artificials have been working well. Using plugs early then switching to soft plastics and spoons has been creating a steady bite where as live bait like pinfish and mullet has been almost guarantee bite. It looks as though we will continue a rain pattern moving into the holiday weekend which will only secure the continued bite. I hope everyone has a safe and happy Fourth of July !
