The bite throughout the New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon waters has been good this past week both before and after our cool front. We continue to have a good number of bait holding on the flats and the backwaters making for easy meals for our game fish.
Spoons , plugs and soft plastics have all been working well along with finger mullet and shrimp for live bait. It looks like we are on a warming trend heading into the latter part of the week which will continue to increase the bite. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394

We have had a little change in the weather over the past few days with some cooler dryer air moving in. With this cooler dryer air has brought a North / Northeast wind that has continued to raise the water levels in the New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon area. The fish are still around and continue to be mixed in with the bait, the only difference is with the influx of water they have spread out a bit. With the fish spread out a bit covering water has been the key to get bit.
Targeting windward shorelines covered in bait has been working well and they have been receptive to both live and artificial baits. It looks like we have a little rain in our future and some returning warmer weather over the next week so enjoy the cool down while it’s here. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 We have had some strange weather for the past week making it difficult to fish with wind , rain and high water but it has not stopped us from catching. I said it was difficult not impossible, we have had to run around a little bit trying to stay dry and then getting the wind to our backs looking for the pods of bait pushed up on the flats was where the majority of the fish were found. We were catching both redfish and trout holding in and around the bait pods throughout the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon. The water has become higher due to the NE winds over this past week allowing these fish some new feeding opportunities so definitely look in places that usually has little to no water that is holding bait. It looks as though this weather system will be settling down by the end of the week which will make a good bite only better.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 It seemed as the Fall weather gave us a little tease here in Central FL this past week with some lows in the 60’s. Unfortunately that was short lived and we are back into high 70’s at night and 90’s in the day . The good news is that this weather has not effected our bite in the New Smyrna Beach area at all. We still continue to have plenty of bait scattered throughout the backwaters and into Mosquito Lagoon.
With all the bait comes our game fish like trout , redfish and snook looking for easy meals . Targeting the bait pods with live bait or artificial has been working well and producing an array of different species. The weather looks to be back on the afternoon shower pattern so early morning will probably be best to get a line wet. Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 It looks as though we are getting a little mild cooling front this week and I’m not complaining. Let’s not get crazy though when I say cooling its down to 91 degrees instead of 98 but I’ll take it. The bite continues ti be strong throughout the New Smyrna Beach waters and south into Mosquito Lagoon. The bait is sill pouring onto the flats and into the intracoastal making for easy feeding for several species.
The redfish and trout have been mixed in with the bait pods up on the flats where as the jacks and snook have been holding a little deeper around the structure. The tarpon can still be found off the beach and throughout the intracoastal mixed in and around the bait pods as well. It looks like we will continue to have our afternoon showers for the rest of the week so early starts are recommended not only for the cooler water temps but also not to get wet . Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The weather may have cooled off just a little but that bite still seems to be hot . We are continuing to boat several different species trout and redfish to snook and black drum. The bait is still in great numbers throughout the backwaters of New Smyrna Beach and south into Mosquito Lagoon. The bite still seems to be slowing down by mid day due to the heat but the mornings have been the ticket. Look for the large bait pods and the fish will be near by . We have also had some good numbers of fish shallow up on the flats milling around early as well. Live bait and soft plastics have been working well along with a gold spoon . The weather looks good through the week so I foresee the bite continuing.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 Even after our one day of hurricane conditions here on the East Coast the bite continues strong throughout New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon. The bait continues to be covering the flats and shorelines making for great cover and opportunities for game fish. Plugs and soft plastics have been working well early morning along with live bait as well. Target the edges of the bait pods whether it’s artificial or live bait and the bites will come. We have been boating all different species like redfish, trout, black drum , jacks and snook just to mention a few. The weather looks to be good for the extended forecast which means the bite should only continue to be good.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The heat has continued to be relentless this past week but has not affected the bite at all. We have been having a steady bite from New Smyrna Beach south throughout the Mosquito Lagoon. Early starts and early finishes have been the key. Look for the bait hanging on the flats and shorelines and the fish will not be far. Plugs and spoons have been working early but live bait has been a little better bite. It looks like we have some possible weather working into Central Florida next week . If it does make its way , it may actually help to cool the temps down and continue the bite.
Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 The bite continues in the New Smyrna Beach and Daytona Beach waters. We have been targeting several different species from redfish and trout to snook and black drum. Although the temperatures have been pretty toasty this past week it hasn’t stopped the bite. Both artificial’s and live bait have been working well especially early morning. By mid morning moving over to live bait has been the ticket as the fish start to move to deeper water off the flats.
We still have plenty of bait scattered through Mosquito Lagoon and the backwaters of New Smyrna which continues to hold fish in the area . Targeting the bait pods early has been successful for both redfish and trout. The up coming week looks to be the same weather pattern as what we have had so the bite should continue to be strong . Capt Patrick Rood www.spotntailcharters.com (386)566-1394 We are definitely in a summer heat wave here in the Central FL area with daily highs in the mid to upper 90’s. The water temps have increased as well making the bite a little slower due to the warmer waters . That does not mean the bite has stopped we just have to focus on the cooler parts of the days Luke the early mornings or late evenings. The bait is still plentiful throughout the New Smyrna Beach waters south into Mosquito Lagoon. Live bait has been the choice the past couple of weeks but slow worked artificials will produce a bite as well. We have been targeting redfish, snook , trout and the occasional tarpon when they want to cooperate . It looks like we could have our afternoon showers back in the forecast starting next week which will help out on the cool down both in the air and water temperatures.
